The MFL MarMac boys basketball team struggled to find a rhythm in an upset loss to Jesup in its Feb. 20 postseason opener.

The Bulldogs held back Jesup 14-11 through the first quarter, but the J-Hawks flew across the court in the second, grabbing rebounds and knocking down key shots in a 22-13 scoring run.

Jesup led 33-27 by halftime and built that lead to double digits after the break. The Bulldogs trailed 54-42 by the end of the third quarter, and despite rallying a bit in the fourth, couldn’t catch up. The J-Hawks won 73-56, stunning the team and the home crowd in Monona.

Jesup hit just over 44 percent of its shots, out-pacing MFL MarMac’s 35.5 percent. The J-Hawks landed one more three than the Bulldogs and got to the free throw line nine more times, making 12 of 15 attempts.

There was a stark contrast in the rebound column, where Jesup totaled 44 and the Bulldogs 31. MFL MarMac had just eight offensive rebounds all night, while the J-Hawks capitalized on second chance scoring opportunities.

The Bulldogs particularly struggled to stop Jesup senior Landon Vogel, who put up 27 points on eight of 14 shooting, including four of the team’s seven three-pointers.

With 21 points, Parker Kuehl was MFL MarMac’s top scorer. The senior also had team highs with seven rebounds and three assists.

Carter Lightfoot contributed 20 points—12 of which came from behind the arc—and grabbed five rebounds and four of the team’s seven steals.

Jesup largely contained Bulldog big man Landyn Miene, limiting him to six points. The senior had all four MFL MarMac blocks on the defensive end.

The Bulldogs finished the season 18-5 overall and 14-2 in the Upper Iowa Conference, where they placed second to North Fayette Valley.
