After an exciting opening win over Wapsie Valley, the MFL MarMac girls basketball team’s postseason run came to an end last week against dominant Maquoketa Valley.
The Bulldogs had just a 9-8 advantage through the first quarter of the Feb. 18 game versus a physical Wapsie Valley squad, but started to pull away before halftime. A 14-6 run gave them a 23-14 lead heading into the break.
MFL MarMac continued to distance itself in the third period, holding the Warriors to just eight points while dropping 17 of their own. The lead was now 40-22.
Although Wapsie Valley scored its most points of the game in the final quarter, the Bulldog offense continued to click in a resounding 57-36 victory.
MFL MarMac compiled a 40.8 percent shooting night, including six three-pointers. Five came from junior Kacie Picha, who was the team’s second leading scorer with 15 points.
The Bulldogs capitalized on 11 of 16 free throw attempts, while Wapsie Valley made just eight of 21. The Warriors also turned the ball over 25 times compared to MFL MarMac’s 11.
In addition to Picha, Emme Wikner contributed 16 points. Emma Driscoll scored seven and topped the assists column with six. Ava Kishman totaled six points and tied for the team high with five rebounds.
That momentum came to a screeching halt Feb. 21 at Maquoketa Valley, the eighth ranked team in Class 2A. The Wildcats jumped out to a commanding 24-4 lead in the first quarter, an amount the Bulldogs couldn’t overcome in a 47-19 regional semifinal loss. It was by far MFL MarMac’s lowest point total of the season.
With 27 points, Maquoketa Valley’s Bianka Ronnebaum scored more than the Bulldogs collectively. She was six of nine from long range and made all but one of the Wildcats’ three-pointers.
Autumn Shaw led the Bulldogs with seven points and Driscoll and Kishman each had four.
MFL MarMac finished the season 15-9 overall and 14-2 in the Upper Iowa Conference, sharing the league title with Turkey Valley.
