It was a windy and chilly start to the golf season for Central, as they welcomed West Central to the Elkader Golf & Country Club last week. But the Warriors handled the elements and their opponent to come away with team and individual wins.

On the girls side, West Central did not have enough golfers to compete for a team score, so Central won with a score of 235.

Individually, the Warriors also finished in the top two spots. Addison Amsden shot a 57 to tie for first and Katie Royer shot a 58 to tie for second. Ella Frieden and Rayanne Dunlap both shot a 59, followed by Brandi Herman with a 61, Mayleigh Medberry a 67 and Lily Becwar a 72.

The boys also took the win over a full West Central squad that shot 217 as a team, compared to Central’s 171.

The Warriors had the first- and second-place golfers, with Griffen Hammersland shooting a 41 to finish one stroke ahead of teammate Owen Burke, who shot a 42 for second place. Other top scores for the Warriors were Owen Hammersland and Isaac Loan with 44s and Mason Loan with a 47. Caden Fette hit a 49 and Blake Hunt put up a 51.

The Warriors were back on the course April 17, at the Silver Springs Golf and Country Club versus the South Winneshiek Warriors.

The girls shot 272 as a team, falling to South Winneshiek, who shot a 217. South Winn also took the top six spots individually, with the highest Central golfer being Royer with a 65. Herman finished the round with a 66, Amsden earned a 70 and Medberry finished with a 71.

The boys also fell to South Winn, who shot 168 compared to Central’s 184. Central’s top individual was G. Hammersland in fifth with a 42, three strokes out of first place. O. Hammersland was sixth with a 44, followed by Burke in eighth with a 48. Trey Young finished with a 49, and Fette shot a 50 to round out the top 10. The Warriors also took 11th with Aidan Wellendorf shooting a 50, while Jake Hertrampf finished with a 51.

“With the weather playing a big part for our young team, I’m very pleased with our performances thus far. Lots of learning on how to playing in wind and cold. Excited to see them all play as we move forward,” said coach Ryan Burke.

The Warriors will be back at home April 24, to play MFL MarMac. Start time is 4 p.m.
