Through windy weather and a chance of rain, the Central girls track and field team remained focused competing in the Decorah Girls Relays on April 17. The Warriors took part in 17 events at the junior varsity and varsity levels, finishing with 14 top fives and six top 10s, along with eight personal records, while placing sixth with 28 points.

“The weather started out windy, but with at least some sun and warmth. We knew it wouldn’t last, so meet management tried hard to move the meet along to get it in before things turned worse. As the meet went on, it remained very windy and got cooler, but the rain held off, so it still wasn’t too bad,” said coach Martha Bauder.

One of the standout races was the JV 100-meter dash, where Ella Frieden put up a career best time of 14.73 seconds to take fourth place, followed by Natalya Singleton in sixth with a 15.17.

The Warriors also put in a solid effort in the JV 200, where two runners came away with personal record times. Tenley Bormann crossed the line in second place in a time of 31.60 seconds and Layla Embretson finished fifth in 32.39.

Blair Scherf added another highlight in the varsity 800-meter run with a fifth-place finish. In the other distance events, the Warriors had a fifth-place run by Frieden in the 3000-meter, while Coral Rork took 11th in the 1500.

Central piled up top fives in the relays, including a fifth-place run in the 4x100 with Payton Stannard, Mya Gregerson, Bormann and Maci Keppler. Central added another fifth place in the 800-sprint medley with Keppler, Stannard, Alivia Wiley and Frieden.

“We’ve been working hard on precision and speed on our relay handoffs and also on running mechanics. I saw quite a bit of improvement in those two areas. In particular, there were several wonderful, textbook handoffs throughout the meet,” Bauder said.

Then it was a run of fourth-place finishes, starting with the 4x800 featuring Scherf, Reese Berns, Aspen Rork and Coral Rork. The 4x400 of Scherf, Frieden, Lily Becwar and Wiley was fourth, as was the 4x200, in which Wiley, Keppler, Stannard and Frieden turned in a season best time of 1:59.67.

Wiley added another season best in the 400-meter hurdles, shaving almost a second off her seed time to finish fifth with a 1:17.13. Berns was sixth in the 100-meter race.

The Warriors continued to excel in the field events, with Berns notching a season best long jump of 14-08.50 to finish in eighth place, and Brooke Tieden took fifth in the high jump with a 4-02.

In the throwing events, Scherf participated in the junior varsity discus, hitting 82-06 for fifth place. In the varsity competition, Embretson and Singleton took seventh and ninth, respectively. As for the shot put, Singleton bested her teammate for fourth place, while Embretson was 10th.

The girls were back in action April 21, at New Hampton, and will go to West Delaware April 24.
