Audrey Posten and Steve Van Kooten have taken over editorial duties for The Guttenberg Press newspaper, joining long-time Press staff Austin Greve and Melissa Spielbauer-Combs.
Posten is currently editor of the Times-Register, based in Elkader and McGregor. She grew up outside of Prairie du Chien, Wis., and graduated from the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee in 2013 with degrees in journalism and history. Posten became editor of the North Iowa Times in summer 2013 and has continued in that role through the newspaper’s merger with the Clayton County Register in 2020.
She lives in McGregor and is active with the McGregor-Marquette Chamber of Commerce, McGregor Historical Society and McGregor’s economic development group, the Pocket City Progress Committee. Other interests include history, traveling and Milwaukee Brewers baseball.
An Iowa Falls native, Van Kooten spent more than 15 years working with adults and children with disabilities for nonprofit organizations in Iowa, Minnesota, Wisconsin and Illinois. He worked with a wide variety of clients as a crisis interventionist, job developer and summer camp director before starting his career in journalism. Van Kooten is editor of the Courier Press in Prairie du Chien, Wis.
When he’s not traveling up and down the Mississippi River, he works in tandem with the Civil Air Patrol and Oktoberfest committees in Prairie du Chien.
Both the Times-Register and Courier Press newspapers are part of the Morris Newspapers of Wisconsin publishing group along with The Guttenberg Press, and staff have often worked in tandem to cover events and share news stories.
Posten and Van Kooten understand the importance of community journalism, and want to continue the work of recently-retired Shelia Tomkins. Their goal is to connect readers with the community through timely, relevant news about local government and the school, as well as features on people and places.
