Margaret B. Crandall, 102, of Volga, passed away peacefully on Saturday, March 29, 2025, at the Strawberry Point Lutheran Home in Strawberry Point.
Margaret Blanche Prideaux was born Sept. 15, 1922, in rural Maynard, to Benjamin and Orah (Masters) Prideaux. She graduated from Maynard Community Schools. On Sept. 9, 1944, she was united in marriage to Glen Willard (Bill) Crandall in Arlington.
Margaret worked for the U.S. Postal Service in Corpus Christi, Texas, where Bill was last stationed during World War II. After completing his service, Bill and Margaret operated Crandall’s Market in Volga from 1945 to 1967. Margaret then worked at the local hardware store and finished her career as a branch manager at Central State Bank from 1975 to 1993.
Margaret liked being outdoors, whether she was fishing at the cabin, bird watching, mushroom hunting or gardening. She was a lifelong avid reader and could often be found working on crossword puzzles, which she completed with remarkable skill. Margaret was also a dedicated basketball fan who never missed watching her favorite teams play. She was always happy to see and be with her family members and friends.
Margaret especially cherished spending time with her grandchildren, forming particularly close bonds with them during their teenage and young adult years. She stressed the importance of education and higher education to her children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren, taking great pride in their academic achievements.
Margaret was a member of the Wadena Presbyterian Church, serving three terms as a deacon. She was also a Volga American Legion Auxiliary member for 60 years and served on the Volga Vision Committee.
Margaret is survived by her three children: Bill (Judi) Crandall of Monona, Tom (Carol) Crandall of Volga and Mary (John) Stavnes of Bettendorf; five grandchildren: Erika (Don) Jenkins of Oak Harbor, Wash., Gretchen (Scott) Kriegel of Center Point, Garrett (Shelly) Crandall of West Union, Kelly (Tim) Reilly of Johnston and Jessie (Tyler) Niederhauser of Waukee; 11 great-grandchildren; sister-in-law Jeanette Prideaux of Marion; and many nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her parents, husband, brothers Steve and Tom Prideaux, an infant brother and four sisters: Gladys Ward, Mary Forester, Doris O’Donnell and Letha Bunn.
Memorial service will be at 1 p.m. on Saturday, May 10, at Calvary Bible Church in Volga.
Celebration of life will be from 2 to 4 p.m. on Saturday, May 10, in the Church Fellowship Hall.
