The Central golf team started last week with the boys taking a trip to the Sunnyside Golf & Country Club in Waterloo for the Columbus Catholic Sailor Invitational, where the Warriors finished with a 387 team score, an improvement of over 40 strokes from last year. Coach Ryan Burke said on social media that this “shows just how much work these guys have been putting in.”
The top placing Warriors were Griffen Hammersland in 28th with an 86 and Owen Burke 45th with a 92.
On May 8, both squads went to Clayton Ridge, with the girls losing 233 to 271 and the boys being edged out by the Eagles, 182-192.
Individually, the boys posted solid numbers, with Isaac Loan hitting a 45 for third place and Burke putting up a 47 to finish fourth. Aiden Wellendorf had a 49 to place seventh and Blake Hunt was 10th after carding a 51.
Brandi Herman was the top girls finisher with a 59, earning third place. Katie Royer ended the round with a 62 to take fifth. Addison Amsden shot a 67 for seventh, and Mayleigh Medberry and Rayanne Dunlap rounded out the top 10 with 83s.
The Warriors traveled to North Fayette Valley May 9, where the boys shot their lowest team score of the season to pull off a close 165-167 victory over the TigerHawks.
Griffen Hammersland was the medalist with a 39, while Burke finished third with a 40 and Owen Hammersland was fourth after shooting a 41. Loan shot a 45 to finish eighth.
The girls lost to the TigerHawks 191-254, with Herman’s sixth place finish the highest mark for the Warriors, after she shot a 58. Royer shot a 59 to finish seventh, followed by Amsden in eighth with a 67 and Medberry ninth with a 70.
“The girls’ team showed great effort and improved over last night’s performance, even though they didn’t come away with the win. Proud of their continued growth and determination,” Burke said.
The boys began this week May 12, at Jackson Heights Golf Course, for the Upper Iowa Conference meet. They will compete at the Class 1A district qualifier at the South Winn Golf and Country Club on Wednesday, May 14.
The Warrior girls were at the Guttenberg Golf and Country Club on May 13 for their UIC meet, then will head to the Class 1A regional meet at Lone Pine Country Club Friday, on May 16.
