The Seneca Royals softball team began postseason play last Tuesday, May 27, when they hosted conference rival De Soto in a D5 regional semifinal game. The game was scoreless through two and a half innings when Seneca broke the game open for good with three runs in the bottom of the third inning. The visiting Pirates would get one run back in the top of the fourth inning but that would be all the offense they would produce for the entire game.
The Royals would score two more times in the bottom of the sixth inning before shutting the door for good on De Soto in the top of the seventh inning to claim a 5-1 victory. In a game featuring just seven combined hits between the two teams, the Royals offense was led by a triple from Lily Payne, a double by Kylie Chambers and singles from Raya Wallin and Brittany Heisz. Seneca also got an RBI from Wallin, Addison Davidson and Maya Buffington while Grace Varo and Ava Sime each drew a walk in the win.
Payne started in the pitcher’s circle for the Royals, allowing one run on two hits and five walks while striking out five in 4.1 innings pitched to earn the win. Brigid Hall pitched the final 2.2 innings in relief of Payne, allowing zero runs on one hit and two walks with one strikeout.
The win advanced Seneca to a D5 regional final at Ithaca last Thursday, May 29. The host Bulldogs jumped on the Royals early with six runs in the bottom of the first. The Royals tried to chip away at the deficit with a run in the top of the second, but the Bulldogs scored a run of their own in the bottom of the second before adding two more runs in the bottom of the fourth inning before both teams scored twice in the fifth inning for the final score of 11-3 in favor of Ithaca.
Heisz doubled for one of the Royals three hits as a team with Chambers and Sime having the other two hits. Hall suffered the tough pitching loss, allowing 11 runs (only two earned) on seven hits and four walks with three strikeouts in 6.0 innings pitched.
Seneca finished with an overall record of 12-12 and 8-6 in the Ridge & Valley Conference, which tied De Soto for third place in the conference. The Royals graduate three seniors in Buffington, Chambers and Sime.
