The Left Bank Shop and Gallery in McGregor will host its first-ever open mic night on Saturday, June 21.

Staff member Camille Sweet said the goal is to expand artistic opportunities at the gallery.

“I want this space to be a welcoming place for not just painters or sculptors or jewelry makers. Music is art. Comedy is art. Poetry is art. I want there to be a safe, neutral place for people of all ages, talents and abilities to be able to showcase what they do,” she shared.

Although some bars host open mic nights, Sweet said that excludes those under 21.

“We are a community hub,” she reflected. “We work with kids, we work with adults, and we want to really branch out and reach those other niche areas.”

Open mic night will run from 5 to 7 p.m. Performers will take the stage in the exhibit area, which Sweet noted has good acoustics, on a first come, first serve basis. Each person will get 10 to 15 minutes to share their talent, whatever that may be.

“I would love poetry readings here. I would love to have somebody who’s got some new standup comedy material they want to test out. I would love for someone to bring their guitar in and sing their heart out. Original songs or covers. If you want to do magic tricks, by all means. It’s all welcome and encouraged,” Sweet said.

Even if you don’t plan to perform, community members are welcome to watch and support the performers. That’s the point, quipped Sweet: to entertain.

“We want the community to see what the community is doing. Opening the doors for so much more to be done here, activity-wise,” she said.
