The MFL MarMac boys basketball team last week dropped a pair of Upper Iowa Conference games to Crestwood and Waukon—two teams with a combined three losses on the season.

The Bulldogs were out-matched early against the Cadets on Jan. 20, losing 91-55. Crestwood shot over 61 percent from the field and rattled off 13 three-pointers, while the normally sure-handed Bulldogs managed only five. There was also a stark rebounding advantage, as Crestwood came down with 39 and MFL MarMac only 17.

Senior Carter Lightfoot led the Bulldogs with 21 points and dished out a team-high four assists. He also had a rebound and a block.

Fellow senior Wesley Corlett finished the night with 12 points, five rebounds, two steals and an assist. He accounted for three of the team’s four blocks. Senior Eli Hanson matched Corlett’s 12 points, in addition to four rebounds, three steals and an assist.

The Bulldogs continued to struggled from three-point range at Waukon on Jan. 22, hitting just three of 20—and only 29.8 percent of shots overall—in a 51-36 loss. The Indians also struggled from long range, with only three makes, but got to the free throw line 18 times of MFL MarMac’s six, making 11 of those attempts. Like Crestwood, they out-rebounded the Bulldogs by double digits.

Hanson netted 11 points along with three assists and three steals, while Lightfoot’s stat line included 10 points, three assists, two rebounds and a steal. Corlett was just shy of a double-double with eight points and 11 rebounds. He also had all three team blocks.

MFL MarMac is now 7-5 overall and 10-6 against Upper Iowa Conference opponents. The team hosted South Winneshiek in Monona on Jan. 27, then will head to Clayton Ridge on Jan. 30.
