City council meets for routine monthly session

The Guttenberg city council at its monthly meeting on Oct. 13 heard funding requests from two Clayton County entities, listened to a resident concerned about engine brake noise, and began the budget process for the coming fiscal year by setting a workshop for Nov. 17.

A private family inurnment will follow at St. Joseph Catholic Cemetery, Elkader. A Memorial Reception will be held at Johnson’s Reception Hall in Elkader following Mass until 3 p.m.

Virginette Frommelt of Guttenberg, faithful servant of the Lord, passed peacefully into eternal life on Tuesday, Oct. 7, 2025, surrounded by her family.

Visitation was Thursday, Oct. 9, at Morris Funeral Home in Guttenberg.

Funeral services were Friday, Oct. 10, at St Mary’s Catholic Church in Guttenberg.

Robin R. Ackley Kelso

Robin Rae Ackley Kelso 70, of Rogersville, Ala., passed away peacefully in her sleep at her home after a brave battle with cancer on Aug. 14, 2025.

Robin was born to Glenn and Shirley (Philp) Ackley in Waterloo on June 24, 1955. Formerly from northeast Iowa, she 

attended schools in Garnavillo, graduating from Guttenberg in 1973.

Iowa State Auditor and Democratic candidate for governor Rob Sand visited Clayton County last week as part of his annual 100-stop tour around the state. 

Speaking in the Central State Bank Community Room in Elkader on Oct. 8, Sand, who is from Decorah and whose mom worked for 20 years at Keystone AEA, said the stop felt “like I’m close to home.”

Bri Hull, the northeast Iowa field coordinator with Trees Forever, said field days are part of Trees Forever’s Stewards of the Beautiful Land Program, funded through the Living Roadway Trust Fund (LRTF).

Clayton County Womenade has helped people in need for over a decade

Since it launched over a decade ago, Clayton County Womenade has distributed over $128,500 to neighbors in need.

Wendy Shea, one of the founders and a current board member, said the idea came from a Northeast Iowa Community Action meeting, where a woman from Bremer County shared about their Womenade.

Participate in Clayton County Hazard Mitigation Plan update

Hazard risks can be natural or man-made, and cover a variety of things, such as storms and flooding, hazardous materials, infrastructure, human disease and more.  In the coming year, Clayton County Emergency Management, with assistance from Upper Explorerland Regional Planning Commission, will complete an update to the county’s hazard mitigation plan, including reviewing hazard risks and planning mitigation actions to reduce the impacts of risks in the future.

Richard P. Schmelzer

Richard “Rich” P. Schmelzer, 66, of Elkader passed away at his home on Tuesday, Sept. 30, 2025.

Visitation was Monday, Oct. 6, at Morris Funeral Home in Garnavillo and before services at the church.

Funeral services were Tuesday, Oct. 7, at St. Joseph Catholic Church, in Garnavillo, conducted by Deacon Jim Pfaffly.

Cedar Rapids man drowns near Guttenberg

An unidentified 79-year-old Cedar Rapids man drowned near the Bussey Lake boat ramp this past week, according to a news release from Police Chief Derek Chambers.

The police department located the man's boat north of the ramp on Oct. 1 at 11:50 a.m. Witnesses in the area claimed to have seen a man in the water; however, he could not be located at the time.

Emergency service workers and the Iowa Department of Natural Resources conducted a search, locating the man's body at 3:45 p.m.
