National Geographic photographer flies overhead

National Geographic photographer George Steinmetz took this photograph of the Doug and Kathy Reimer farm. His current project is a book about food and commercial agriculture, which will give readers insights into areas many people think of as 'fly-over country.' (Photo courtesy of George Steinmetz)

Renowned journalist, photographer, and explorer George Steinmetz hovered over northeast Iowa last month, documenting the fall harvest from his motorized paraglider. He used satellite images from Google Earth to pinpoint the Guttenberg farm of Doug and Kathy Reimer on Ironwood Road as the ideal location for his photos.

Groups send shelter to refugees

An estimated 11 million Syrians have fled their homes since the March 2011 outbreak of civil war in Syria, precipitated by anti-government protests. There are over four million refugees, three quarters of them women and children, seeking safety and shelter across neighboring countries, and a startling 7.6 million people are displaced within the borders of their own country. Many are living in flimsy, cramped makeshift shelters, like chicken coops or abandoned sheds, with no heat or running water, and many are injured from continuous bombing and shelling.

This Veterans Day, you may see our nation’s heroes dressed in their finest, carrying flags and rifles and responding to commands from a comrade. Those traditions aren’t reserved for Nov. 11. A dedicated group of Guttenberg volunteer veterans provides full military rites for every veteran who dies in the area. “The military funeral is our last farewell to a comrade,” said American Legion member Charlene Andregg, who gathers the men and women for each funeral. “All honorably discharged veterans are entitled to that.”

Chapter 66 of the Iowa Code covers removing an elected official from his or her office.  Only the Attorney General can file a removal petition.
