Clayton Ridge School responds to district rating from DOE

The Clayton Ridge School District sent out a letter to parents and guardians on Dec. 16 regarding their rating from the Iowa School Performance Profiles (ISPP) released by the Iowa Department of Education.

The letter, signed by District Superintendent Shane Wahls, says Clayton Ridge's district rating came in as Needs Improvement.

Ratings included exceptional, high performing, commendable, acceptable, needs improvement and priority.

Ronald C. "Jud" Judkins

Ronald Chester Judkins “Jud” departed this world peacefully, surrounded by family, on Dec. 11, 2025, in Guttenberg. 

A funeral service will be held at a later time to honor Jud’s life and the legacy he leaves behind. The family wishes to invite all who knew him to join in celebrating his remarkable journey. Details on these arrangements will be shared at a later date.

The Rev. Gary Hatcher reflects on 48 years of ministry

As a called and ordained minister of the Church of Christ, The Reverend Gary Hatcher is about to hang up his church vestments after 48 years of witnessing for and proclaiming the Gospel of the Lord. He has ministered to seven parishes during his tenure as God’s servant, his last call being pastor of St. Paul Lutheran in Garnavillo and First Lutheran in McGregor.

Clayton Ridge Elementary students hold winter concert in Garnavillo


Clayton Ridge Elementary students ushered in the holiday season with a winter concert. Pre-schoolers through 5th graders joined together for a medley of winter favorites, concluding with sing-alongs with a packed audience at the Garnavillo Gymnasium.

Clayton Ridge Elementary held their winter concert on Dec. 4 in the Garnavillo Gymnasium, which hosted a packed crowd of parents and community members. The concert began shortly after 2 p.m.

The concert featured musical performances from students in pre-school through 5th grade, opening with a story, “Tales and Tunes of the Season,” told to the audience by Elementary Principal Laura Bilden.

Support group offers connection for local caregivers

The month of November was recognized as National Family Caregiver Month to raise awareness and express gratitude for the hard work and value provided by the over 53 million family caregivers across the country. 

In Iowa, approximately 27 percent of adults, or 657,000 people, are family caregivers. These caregivers play an important role in supporting individuals through personal care, medical care and other life-management tasks.

Northeast Iowa Vietnam Vets eying Giard location for memorial

The Northeast Iowa Vietnam Veterans Association is eying a location along U.S. Highway 18, at Giard, to honor Vietnam War veterans.

The organization—made up of Vietnam veterans from Allamakee, Buchanan, Clayton, Delaware, Fayette and Winneshiek counties—is collaborating with local Eagle Scouts, the Clayton County Historic Preservation Commission and potentially the Giard Methodist Church on the effort, tentatively called the Giard Memorial Park.

For the past year, a monthly cultural program at the Driftless Area Wetlands Centre in Marquette has been forging connections for people with memory loss and their caregivers, bringing people together for an hour of learning, fun and friendship.

Visitation was Wednesday Nov. 19, at Morris Funeral Home in Guttenberg.

Inurnment was at Dubuque Memorial Gardens Cemetery.
