Maryland 4-H visit Wisconsin 4-H in exchange program

Visiting a different part of America, some Maryland 4-Hers got a good taste of fresh cheese, the best milk and some Wisconsin adventures. Grant County 4-Hers hosted nine Marylanders for a week. On their week agenda in Wisconsin was tubing on the river, touring dairy farms, visiting Wisconsin Dells and, of course, a trip to Culver’s.

Each 4-H group signed up online for a few states they wished they could visit. The Wisconsin group emailed the Maryland group first. When each group agreed to visit the other, the dates were chosen, times were marked and schedules were created.
The Marylanders arrived in Wisconsin on June 23, in Milwaukee. The group traveled to Madison where they met up with the Grant County 4-Hers and took a stroll up and down State Street. From Madison, the Marylanders headed to Grant County to see their Wisconsin homes. The following day, they began their Wisconsin experience.

Siblings achieve academic excellence

Siblings have a constant rivalry that never fades away. The Miller siblings, from Prairie du Chien, have reached a new level for “family competition.” Both Amber Miller-Adamany and Jacob Miller have gone above and beyond with their education. Jacob is now in Chile working on his dissertation and Amber is conducting important research for a better ecosystem.

Eastman Independence Day celebrations fun for all

The dunk tank was a popular attraction even if you didn’t quite hit the mark.

‘That’ll be the day’ July 16

Johnny Rogers’ “Buddy and Beyond” tour will visit Prairie du Chien Thursday, July 16 at Huckleberry’s. This concert will highlight the great oldies, bring back memories and get your feet tappin’ to the beat.

The Jim Juve Iowa Rock ‘n’ Roll Hall of Fame Production will have musical pieces from Buddy Holly, Roy Orbison, Elvis, The Beatles and more. Performer Johnny Rogers is especially good at Buddy Holly impressions, so good Buddy’s immediate family and band endorse him. Rogers knew exactly what he wanted to do with his life after his radio personality father gave him a guitar for Christmas and “Rave On” hit the radio; he wanted to be like Buddy. He performs these concerts in honor and tribute of the rock ‘n’ roll legends.

2-year-old girl pulled from Mississippi River has died

GRANT COUNTY—A 2-year-old girl from Waterloo, Iowa, died after being pulled from the Mississippi River Saturday among some islands on the Wisconsin side, across from Waupeton, Iowa.

Bryle Morgan was transported by Sherrill Ambulance to Mercy Medical Center Dubuque, then flown to University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics. She died early Sunday morning, according to the Grant County Sheriff’s Department.

The girl was preparing for a group photograph with her family at approximately 5:05 p.m., when she and her mother returned to a boat to retrieve an item, according to a sheriff’s department news release. When the mother got out of the boat, she noticed the girl was missing and the family began to search.

The girl was found under a boat in the water. She was immediately pulled from the water and rescue efforts were started.

Bryle was wearing a life jacket prior to the incident, but it was removed prior to taking the group picture.

Tank at PdC veteran memorial is Top Notch

On Wednesday, July 1, the tank located at the Prairie du Chien veteran’s memorial was given a little spruce up by Top Notch Construction and Design, LLC. If you’ve been driving on Marquette Road in Prairie du Chien, you may have noticed that the tank at the Prairie du Chien veteran’s memorial has had a bit of a makeover. On Wednesday, July 1, Top Notch Construction and Design, LLC, began the process of repainting the area landmark. “We had four guys out here all day,” said Pete Langmeier, one of the company’s owners.

Afterward, Pete said that he had a new respect for the men who manned the machine in combat. In order to repaint the tank, the Top Notch workers first power-washed and scraped off the old layer of paint. When it was dried off, the crew then put two coats of paint on the machine to finish off the job.

Top Notch donated both the time and materials for the project’s completion. “Prairie has been very good to us,” said Pete. “We wanted to find a way to give something back.”

Friends of the Mississippi River to hold beach clean up on St. Feriole Island

With the beautiful summer weather, many people are spending more time outside along the riverfront. Unfortunately, a time that is meant to be for relaxing and fun is turning into a time spent picking up trash.

“I spend a lot of time down there,” said 29-year-old Desiree Stephenson, organizer of the upcoming community service events to clean up the St. Feriole Island’s Mississippi River beach.

Stephenson said that the desire to do something about the conditions of the beach stemmed from an afternoon with her kids and friends. “We spent about an hour cleaning just so the kids could play. We ended up with a plastic bag full.”
