FWS McGregor District plans construction of headquarters and maintenance facility

The U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service (Service) has developed a draft environmental assessment proposing to construct, operate and maintain an administrative headquarters and visitor contact station along with adequate parking and entrance road in Allamakee County. This multi-purpose building would support the McGregor District of the Upper Mississippi River National Wildlife and Fish Refuge.

Daryl D. Engelhardt

Daryl D. Engelhardt, formerly of Rochester, Minn., Sun City West, Ariz., and Hailey, Idaho, peacefully passed away in Twin Falls, Idaho, on April 2, 2023. He was born in Luana and was the eldest of six children. Growing up on a farm, Daryl worked tirelessly feeding the hogs and chickens, cutting firewood and enjoying his passion for squirrel hunting. His love for swimming began at Rabbit Lake, which became an integral part of his life.

Colleen A. Darby

Colleen A. Darby passed away March 24, 2021, at the Carroll Center Nursing Home in Sarasota, Fla., after a short illness. She was born Nov. 22, 1927, to parents Charles and Elda Obermeier in Charles City. Colleen was baptized and confirmed in the Lutheran church, and her faith and belief in God sustained her throughout her life and was a great blessing to her.

Driftless League endeavors to unify rules for area town teams


Central won the 4/5 baseball tournament in the Driftless League in extra innings on the field at Guttenberg. Coaches were Jarod Bormann, Chris Reimer and Nick Trenkamp.

The 2023 Driftless League 6/7 baseball tournament champions from Central earned the victory in extra innings on the home field in Elkader. The team was coached by Jamie Hammersland, Brian Koth and Joel Everitt, who also served as tournament director.

The 6/7 softball Driftless League tournament champions from Central were one of eight teams in the tournament that took place in Postville. The victors were coached by Jay Wagner, Andrew Armstrong, Donna Lawler, Jamie Scherf and Jackie Bormann.
