Spreading kindness one rock at a time

Kindness is spreading across Clayton County—and beyond—through rocks. Decorated with fun characters, nature scenes and inspirational messages, the small treasures are made and then hidden around the area by a dedicated group. They hope community members will find and re-hide the rocks—finding a bit of joy in the process.

Anyone can decorate and hide a rock, said Stacie Friederick. “You don’t have to be an artist. You don’t have to be fancy. You just have to make people smile,” she shared.

A label on the back of each rock invites finders to post a photo and the location of their discovery in the Clayton County Rocks (Iowa) Facebook group. Rocks are often hidden in parks, outside businesses and in other public places.

McGregor continues to pressure railroad on crossing height, wait times

Although gravel has now allowed pedestrians and motorists to cross the railroad tracks to the McGregor riverfront, city officials continue pressuring Canadian Pacific Kansas City Railway (CPKC) to lower the tracks or provide long-term solutions after CPKC raised the tracks over a foot during spring flooding. City officials hope talks now could also help address trains blocking crossings for extended periods. (Photo by Audrey Posten)
