The MFL MarMac baseball team improved its record to 8-4 last week, bouncing back from a doubleheader sweep at the hands of undefeated South Winneshiek to win games against North Fayette Valley and East Buchanan.

The Bulldogs faced off against South Winn on June 29. The Warriors took game one of the doubleheader 11-1, aided by three separate four-run innings. 

MFL MarMac managed just four hits against tough South Winn pitching. Cullen McShane had two of those and scored the team’s lone run in the second inning. Max Havlicek and JT Stocker had one hit apiece.

The MFL MarMac softball team is now 6-3, after splitting doubleheaders with West Central and South Winneshiek and losing a non-conference match-up with Sumner-Fredericksburg last week.

The Bulldogs won the first game of the June 29 doubleheader with West Central by a score of 9-4. Lauren Haberichter picked up the win, holding the Blue Devils to seven hits and two earned runs over seven innings. She amassed 15 strikeouts, a season best.

The Central softball team had a tough third week of the season, losing a single game to Springville and doubleheaders with West Central and South Winneshiek.

Springville won the June 29 match-up 7-1, bolstered by a four-run third inning. The Warriors scored their lone run in the fourth, when Kaitlyn Wiley drove in Abby Cummer. In addition to a double by Cummer, Delaney Scherf, Lexi Loan, Chelsia Larson and Grace Kuehl all had hits in the game.

The Clayton Ridge/Central (CR/C) War Eagles upped their record to 3-11 last week, capped off by a Friday sweep of Upper Iowa Conference foe Turkey Valley.

The busy week, which included six games, started June 30, with a doubleheader against Kee. The War Eagles took an early 1-0 lead in the first game, but the Hawks tied it up in the bottom of the second, then tacked on runs in four more innings to win 12-2.

Harry C. 'Kelly' Kelleher

Harry Clement Kelleher, Jr., known as “Kelly” to many of his friends and family, passed away peacefully on June 23, 2020, at his home in San Diego, Calif., with his wife of 60 years, Joyce, at his side. Kelly was born on Sept. 16, 1925, in Volga, to Harry and Mary (Connor) Kelleher. He was a graduate of St. Joseph Catholic High School in Elkader and he also attended the University of Iowa. 

Kelly enlisted in the Army while still a teenager and he served as a private first class in Company C in the 424th Infantry in World War II, including the Battle of the Bulge.

Bob E. Shaw

Bob Edwards Shaw, 74, of Manchester, passed away on Saturday, June 27, 2020, at the Good Neighbor Home in Manchester. He was born on Jan. 14, 1946, in Denver, Colo., the son of Anthony and Lottie (Edwards) Shaw. Bob was raised and educated in Hugo, Colo., and was a graduate of Hugh High School. Bob received his bachelor’s degree from the University of Northern Colorado and also completed his master’s degree in school administration.

On Aug. 24, 1974, Bob was united in marriage to Judy Eckhardt in Denver, Colo. The family moved to Iowa and Bob began his career with Keystone AEA in Elkader. Bob completed his PhD in education from the University of Iowa, while also serving as the director of administrative services at Keystone.

Local offices stress that it’s safe to go to the dentist


Family Dentistry Associates of Monona, Waukon Dental and Dental Associates of Prairie du Chien are welcoming patients back for regular appointments. They’re following guidelines to ensure the safety of both patients and staff. Dr. Mark Fohey and the staff at Family Dentistry Associates of Monona remained busy even when dental offices were closed for elective procedures due to the COVID-19 pandemic. 

“We provided emergency care and saw a lot of people in distress—broken teeth, aches and swelling,” he said. “We were here a couple times a week. It was good to at least be able to do that.”

Sidewalks, parking, pedestrian bridge common themes in Elkader visioning feedback

What does Elkader want? What would make the residents of the small community happier? This is what Iowa’s Living Roadways Community Visioning Program wanted to find out. In conjunction with experts from Trees Forever and the Iowa State University Department of Landscape Architecture, they held a workshop and focus groups with community members, as well as conducted surveys and interviewed high school students, to gauge the public’s interest in certain ideas and to pinpoint areas for improvement.

Clayton County Extension to host achievement show for 4-H, FFA youth


The Clayton County Extension Council, Youth Development Committee along with Extension staff have put together the Clayton County 4-H and FFA Achievement Show 2020, which is an alternative for the county fair. The Clayton County Agricultural Society has postponed the 166th Clayton County Fair due to COVID-19 restrictions and safety concerns. This alternative show will offer an opportunity for youth to showcase all the hard work they have put into their projects. (File photo)

In six innings against Turkey Valley, Ethan Stubbs allowed just four hits and one earned run and struck out eight batters.

The MFL MarMac baseball team continued its hot start to the season last week, sweeping North Fayette Valley and taking one of two games against Turkey Valley.

In the first game against NFV on June 24, the Bulldogs won 4-2 after scoring in each of the first four innings. The TigerHawks crossed the plate in both the sixth and seventh, but couldn’t close the gap.

Left fielder Karter Decker was 2-3 in the game with an RBI. Chaise Ziegler was also 2-3, while Ethan Stubbs singled and drove in a run. Max Havlicek, who did not have a hit in the game but was hit by a pitch, walked and stole three bases, scored two of the team’s runs.
