Marquette eyes solutions for Pleasant Ridge Road flooding issues

The city of Marquette hopes reworking the ditch and extending a culvert along Pleasant Ridge Road will help ease some of the flooding issues in the Twin Bluffs neighborhood during major rain events.

At the Oct. 8 council meeting, public works director Jason Sullivan detailed plans to install a 10-foot-by-48-foot old tanker car at the south end of the culvert near the Doll property to prevent erosion that’s compromising the road and sidewalk.

The tanker car, which the council agreed to purchase for $6,500 from Clayton County Recycling, will be the same size as the current culvert, said Sullivan.

A GRRRReat return for iconic fall event

Mother and daughter Janet and Mattie Hallberg flipped the first pancakes at the GRRRR breakfast. Proceeds from that portion of the event will go toward adding a splash pad at McGregor’s Turner Park.

Husband and wife Michael McGrane and Amanda Watters, who came all the way from Boston, were the top male and female 5K finishers at GRRRR. Amanda is six months pregnant.

Roughly 150 people braved the rain and cold on Oct. 5 for the first Great River Road - Road Race (GRRRR) and breakfast since 2002. The date was nearly 40 years after the original event was held at Pikes Peak State Park in 1981. 

At its height, GRRRR drew over 600 entrants to the area, who were attracted to the beautiful fall setting, well-managed race and unique pancake and chicken gravy breakfast. Organizer Duane Boelman was pleased with this year’s turnout, considering the 17-year hiatus and the weather.

“I think it went great,” he said. “People had a great time. They’re thrilled it’s back.”

Stravers reflects on 40 years of raptor research

“We’re all fond of raptors—their beauty, the way they rise and lift up, their strength and boldness.”

But for ornithologist Jon Stravers, that fondness goes back four decades. “Hawkman” has been researching hawks and other raptors—the birds of prey known for their hooked beaks, sharp talons and keen eyesight—since the mid-1970s. He shared some of his experiences Saturday, during a presentation at the 35th annual HawkWatch, an event hosted by Marquette’s Driftless Area Wetlands Centre, in partnership with the Upper Iowa Audubon Society, Raptor Resource Project and Driftless Area Bird Conservation, to celebrate the fall migration of raptors and other birds along the Mississippi River Flyway.

Candidate Profiles: Marquette Council

Marquette voters will have a choice between three candidates to fill two open seats on the Marquette City Council when they head to the polls for city and school board elections on Tuesday, Nov. 5. Polls will be open from 7 a.m. to 8 p.m. at the Marquette Community Center. The highest vote-getters will serve four-year terms on the council. Included on the ballot are Elizabeth Gilman, David Schneider and Eleanor L. Soulli. The candidates recently shared their thoughts on some of the issues that are important to Marquette residents.

Norbert Hammes

Norbert Joseph Hammes Jr., 83, of Marquette, passed away Sunday, Oct. 6, 2019 at home with family at his side.

Norbert was born April 18, 1936, in La Crosse, Wis., the son of Norbert and Marie (Baumgartner) Hammes Sr. He was the oldest of eight children. He attended Holy Trinity Parish Elementary School and Aquinas High School in La Crosse. 

Norbert was united in marriage to Joyce Martinek on May 5, 1956, at Holy Trinity Catholic Church in La Crosse, Wis. They had one child, Deborah, before Joyce passed away. He was then united in marriage with Nancy Rehm on Jan. 14, 1961, at St. Mary Catholic Church in McGregor. They had three children, Mark, Marigrace and Margaret and raised their family in Marquette.

Patricia Dickens

Patricia Mae Dickens, 70, of Prairie du Chien, Wis., formerly of McGregor, passed away peacefully at home on Saturday, Sept. 28, 2019, following a brief illness. She was born on June 16, 1949 in Iowa City, the daughter of Frankie and Bernice (Cavanaugh) Harry.

Doeppke joins Monona PD as full-time officer

The Monona Police Department has a new full-time officer. Riley Doeppke, who’s been serving in the community since earlier this summer, was officially hired for the position last month.

The 20 year old is no stranger to Monona. Doeppke graduated from MFL MarMac in 2017 and spent his early childhood years in town, before later moving to Luana.

“That was a little less pressure,” he admitted. “I knew where a lot of things were in town, but I still had to learn some street names.”

Walz Energy issued another consent order, $10,000 penalty

The Iowa Department of Natural Resources (DNR) has issued a second administrative consent order to Walz Energy, LLC, including another $10,000 penalty, for ongoing violations at the 10,000-head cattle feedlot and biogas operation under construction outside Monona.

The consent order, which the DNR released Sept. 17, requires Walz Energy to cease all illegal discharges to waters of the state, comply with all conditions of its National Pollutant Discharge Elimination System (NPDES) storm water permit, properly maintain food storage basins and maintain two feet of freeboard at all times. Walz Energy must also pay the $10,000 administrative penalty and comply with a consent order issued in August 2018 to address previous violations at the site.

McGregor, Marquette offer variety of activities first two weekends in October

Spend the first two weekends of October in Marquette and McGregor. The two communities are offering a variety of activities for the whole family, starting with the return of the Great River Road - Road Race (GRRRR) on Saturday, Oct. 5.

The moderately difficult out and back 5K and 10K races will begin at 8:30 a.m. at Pikes Peak State Park near McGregor, follow Pikes Peak Road, then head south on the Great River Road. Walkers are also welcome. A kids fun run will also be included in the event too.

Celebrate 35th annual HawkWatch on Oct. 5

On Saturday, Oct. 5, the Driftless Area Wetlands Centre, in partnership with the Upper Iowa Audubon Society, Raptor Resource Project and Driftless Area Bird Conservation, will host the 35th annual HawkWatch. This event celebrates the magnificent fall migration of hundreds of thousands of raptors and other birds along the Mississippi River Flyway. 

HawkWatch is a free event, designed to appeal to everyone, including families, amateur birders and raptor enthusiasts. HawkWatch activities will be held at the Driftless Area Wetlands Centre, located at 509 U.S. 18, in Marquette. Daytime activities will begin at 10 a.m. and will wrap up at 3 p.m. The Big Blue Sky Band will hold a fundraiser concert in the evening, starting at 7 p.m.
