Richards shares childcare knowledge with providers around the country

By day, Rosaura “Rosie” Richards is the lead preschool teacher at Dr. Smith Childcare Center, in McGregor, helping local children grow and learn.

By night, she shares that knowledge with others, teaching online courses for early educators through the University of Wisconsin-Platteville. Her students are Spanish-speaking childcare providers, living from New York to California, and Richards can work with them all from the comfort of her home in Marquette.

“It’s been fun,” she shared, “and I’m still doing my job through the day, which I love.”

Arlene Crider, 87, of Eldorado, died Friday, March 22, 2019 at Maple Crest Manor, Fayette.

She was born July 9, 1931 to Lewis and Amanda (Stray) Ruroden at home on the farm in Fayette County. Arlene was baptized and confirmed at East Clermont Church in Clermont. She attended country school at Marion Township #3 Groth and graduated from Elgin High in 1950. Arlene was united in marriage with James Crider on Jan. 5, 1951, in Caledonia, Minn. Two children were born to this union. Arlene worked as a bookkeeper at Big Gain Feed for 25 years, Schwans, Landis Fertilizer and Carpenter and Craft, all in West Union. She also babysat in many homes for years and they called her “Grandma” and “Ene.”

Pastor Erika Kielstrup was a kid when she first heard God beckoning her to ministry. At 14, the Wisconsin native read scripture at one of her cousin’s weddings, and throughout high school, she became heavily involved in her home church, doing everything from reading to singing in the choir. She also enjoyed attending synod activities. Something held her back, though.

Record six students earn all-state nominations in individual speech

Six MFL MarMac high school students have received all-state nominations for individual speech this year—a record for the district.

“It’s a huge honor,” said teacher and coach Angie Killian. “There’s just a small percentage—8 percent—when you start off at districts that make it to All-State statewide.”

After earning straight ones at the state contest, seniors Emma Ammons, Lizzie Herzmann (in two categories) and Hannah Rose, along with juniors Max Koeller and Keagan Smerud and freshman Haylee Guyer, all picked up nominations.

MFL MarMac PPEL vote is April 2

On Tuesday, April 2, voters in the MFL MarMac School District will be asked if they would like to continue the district’s physical plant and equipment levy (PPEL). Polls for this special election will be open from noon to 8 p.m. at the Monona Community Center and Marquette Community Center.

Superintendent Dale Crozier said the levy is simply a continuation of an existing revenue source the district has had for the past 16 years.

“We’re not adding anything,” he stressed.

Proposed underground transmission line would cut through Clayton County

Direct Connect Development Company (DC DevCo) has announced plans to construct the SOO Green Renewable Rail project (SOO Green), a proposed 349-mile, 2,100 mega-watt, high-voltage direct current (HVDC) transmission line that will run underground along an existing railroad.

The majority of the project’s route will be located along rail owned by Canadian Pacific, and a portion of it will cut through northern Clayton County. Once completed, SOO Green will run from Mason City to the Chicago area.

The Mississippi River hit minor flood stage—16 feet—at McGregor on Monday, and was expected to reach 17.7 feet by mid-week. The hydrograph showed it holding steady at that level through the coming weekend.

Middle schoolers planning play audience won’t forget

Although the story line is based around amnesia, audiences will find it hard to forget this year’s MFL MarMac Middle School play. Students will present the fun-filled mystery “Princess Who?” this Friday and Saturday, March 22 and 23, with 7 p.m. showings each night in the high school auditorium in Monona.

Written by Brian D. Taylor, “Princess Who?” is about a princess who loses her memory, explained seventh grader Ruby Koeller, who plays the lead role.

After waking up alone, in a forest, “she goes through different fairy tales to find it again,” Koeller said.

McGregor’s Sixth Street bridge to be replaced this year

The McGregor Council, at its March 13 meeting, approved an engineering contract with H.R. Green for replacement of the Sixth Street bridge.

Grant funding from the Iowa Department of Transportation will pay for the project, which H.R. Green senior project manager Tim Cutsforth said will include removing the current bridge and replacing it with a box culvert.

“A few years ago, it was patched up,” Cutsforth noted, “but the abutments are starting to go. It’s met its lifespan.”
