Clayton SWCD honors outstanding conservation efforts of local farm families

The Clayton Soil and Water Conservation District (SWCD) honored the outstanding conservation efforts of local farm families during the annual awards banquet held Dec. 6, at the Central State Bank Community Room in Elkader. This year’s award winners showcase a variety of conservation efforts and each recipient provides an outstanding example of what can be done to protect the natural resources people enjoy in northeast Iowa. The awards program is co-sponsored by the Clayton County Farm Bureau.

Enjoy new art experiences at art center’s winter workshops

Enjoy new art experiences this winter at one of the workshops offered by the McGregor-Marquette Center for the Arts.

Held on Saturdays from mid-January through early-March, all workshops will be taught by local artists at The Left Bank Shop and Gallery, in McGregor. Beginners are welcome at these classes, which are suitable for both teens and adults. All materials will be included in the class fee. Classes offered this year include:

Pottery (Session One), Jan. 12, 9 a.m. to noon—Mike Kabele will lead participants in making wheel thrown candle holders.

Monona Visioning Committee proposes playground for Gateway Park

With six designs selected for the new downtown steel street banners and ready to be cut out this winter by MFL MarMac industrial technology students for spring installation, members of Monona’s community visioning committee have turned their attention toward the next project: a playground at Gateway Park.

Following the extension of the city’s popular Butterfly Trail from the Butterfly Garden to Gateway Park this summer, the idea was natural, said Monona Chamber and Economic Development Executive Director Rogeta Halvorson, who was among the visioning committee members who spoke at the Dec. 17 council meeting.

The wrestling season didn’t get off to the best start for Collin Henkels. On the opening night of practice, the freshman broke his leg.

“It was a freak accident,” said head coach Chet Bachman. “He just landed wrong.”

The wrestling coaches, as well as some of the girls basketball coaches who were at practice nearby, rushed to help while Bachman called 911.

“It kind of scared the kids in the wrestling room,” he noted.

Henkels ended up hospitalized and missed two weeks of school. He’s now getting around on crutches.

DNR cites Walz Energy with another violation

Infraction is fourth since July EPC meeting

The Iowa Department of Natural Resources (DNR) last week issued another notice of violation to Walz Energy, LLC, for failure to comply with its National Pollutant Discharge Elimination System (NPDES) stormwater permit.

The notice says Walz has also not met the requirements of the administrative consent order it entered into with the DNR in August to address previous violations at the 10,000-head cattle feedlot and biogas operation under construction outside Monona.

For Stu Crew, the best gift is giving back

Last week, MFL MarMac Middle School Stu Crew members Carter Stoddard (left), Holden Mathis, Amelya Weigand, Kaylee Nuehring, Ava Kishman, Lauren Kishman and Hailee Corlett purchased $300 in donations for the Shepherd of the Hills holiday shop. Shepherd of the Hills, in St. Olaf, held its annual Christmas Just 4 Kids Giveaway last week, an annual event that, through the generous donations of individuals, churches and organizations, stocks a holiday shop with a variety of gifts for local families in need. In addition to items like toys, games and books, all children were slated to receive pajamas, new pillows and pillow cases and a quilt or blanket.

This year, over 200 families and 450 children in Clayton County will benefit from Christmas Just 4 Kids. And the MFL MarMac Middle School Student Council, or “Stu Crew,” has once again played a part in making the season brighter for them all.

Programming class relies on failure, trial and error to help students learn

MFL MarMac student Jaxon Lenth watches as the S3 Scribbler Robot rolls across a piece of paper. A blue Sharpie marker inserted into the middle of its small, green frame, Scribbler navigates and turns on its own, etching out the letter “G.”

The robot doesn’t really move on its own, though. Lenth has told it exactly what to do using a series of code he’s programmed into Scribbler. Built through a program on his laptop computer, then downloaded onto Scribbler with a USB cord, the code dictates how far Scribbler should move, when it should move and in which direction. The “G” is the second to last letter in the phrase “Go Bulldogs,” which Lenth has worked throughout the semester to write using the robot.

School board weighs change to Wednesday early outs

The MFL MarMac School Board held a preliminary discussion on the 2019-2020 calendar at its Dec. 10 meeting, largely focusing on whether to rethink the district’s Wednesday early outs.

For the past five years, school has dismissed an hour early, at 2:20 p.m., most Wednesdays, and staff members use that time for professional development, committee meetings and other activities.

Marquette Council considers sewer rate adjustment

At its Dec. 11 meeting, the Marquette Council approved the first reading of an ordinance that would up the city’s sanitary sewer rate.

City clerk Bonnie Basemann said the auditor recommended the city make the move in order to “help bring things back to operating in the positive.”

If approved, the change would mean a 1 percent monthly increase for residential properties.

Shirley K. Weller

Shirley Kujawa Weller, 94, of Glen Burnie, Md., passed away on Dec. 5, 2018.

Shirley was born on May 24, 1924, in Marquette, to the late Frank and Gladys Kujawa.

She graduated from Marquette High School Class of 1941. In 1946, she married Everett Weller, of McGregor. Because of Everett’s Army career, they lived in six states and two foreign countries. She enjoyed sewing, playing the piano, reading and playing cards. Shirley was a member of Glen Burnie Baptist Church.

She was preceded in death by her beloved husband, Everett H. Weller, and her sister, Elma Reetz.
