JoAnn R. Whittle

JoAnn R. Whittle, 87, of Elkader, died Monday, Nov. 16, 2020, at the Elkader Care Center. She was born Dec. 25, 1932, in rural Geddes, S.D., to Andrew and Adela (Bartekoske) Shea. The family moved to Iowa when JoAnn was very young.

She was united in marriage with Malcolm Whittle on Nov. 8, 1952, at St. Joseph Catholic Church in Elkader. The couple was blessed with five children. Throughout the years, JoAnn worked as a telephone operator, did babysitting in her own home, worked at the Elkader Wire Factory and, lastly, was a cook at Scenic Acres. She was a very hard worker, always putting family first. She enjoyed family gatherings, especially getting to see her grandchildren and great-grandchildren. She will be remembered by all as someone with a quick smile. JoAnn was an active member of St. Joseph Catholic Church.

Chad E. Klatt

Chad E. Klatt, of Minneapolis, Minn., went to be with our Lord on Nov. 5, 2020, after a lengthy illness. Chad was born in Waterloo, to Ernie and Luanne (Orvis) Klatt on June 11, 1979. Early in his childhood, his grandparents, Richard and Karen Orvis of Elkader, became his legal guardians and he spent his childhood and youth with them. He graduated from Central Community High School in Elkader in 1997, and played football and basketball and was an outstanding student. He had a love of music and played the drums, following in the footsteps of his father, a drummer and member of the Iowa Rock and Roll Hall of Fame. He then attended the University of Northern Iowa where he graduated Magna Cum Laude in 2001 as the valedictorian in his finance major.

Margaret A. 'Peggy' Duart

Margaret Ann “Peggy” Duart, 91, of Strawberry Point, passed away on Saturday, Nov. 21, 2020, at her home. Margaret, who was affectionately called Peggy, was born on July 10, 1929, in Chicago, Ill., to George and Clarice Penning. She was an only child to this union. Her mother died at the age of 29 when Peggy was 2 years old. After her mother’s death, she went to stay with relatives until the age of 18. Peggy graduated from Lamont High School in 1947. She went on to teacher-training college in Lamont to become a school teacher. After her graduation, she taught school for one year in a one-room school house outside of Masonville.

James R. Schultz

James Schultz, 83, of McGregor, died Tuesday, Nov. 17, 2020, at Great River Care Center in McGregor, after a long illness. James Richard was born March 28, 1937 at the McGregor Community Hospital in McGregor, the son of Earl and Maude (Pare) Schultz. The family lived in the small town of Giard while his dad worked as a hired man for the Gold Mine Farm. In 1947, Jim’s parents purchased their own farm west of McGregor where Jim attended country school through the eighth grade. He graduated from McGregor High School in 1955. Jim helped his dad on the farm and also worked for other area farmers. He also drove a canned milk truck route for the McGregor Cooperative Creamery. He then joined and served six years in the Army National Guard.

Dennis Lee Beck, 83, of Elkader, died Monday, Nov. 16, 2020, in the comfort of his home.

 

Dennis was born Sept. 26, 1937, on the Carl Dietrich Beck farm north of Elkport to Homer and Violet (Duwe) Beck.

Duane Perry Dittmer died peacefully at the age of 81 on Nov. 6, 2020, during a brief hospitalization in West Palm Beach, Fla.

Petrene A. Kelleher Poss

Petrene Ann Kelleher Poss, of San Juan Capistrano, Calif., formerly of Elkader, died peacefully at home on Nov. 17, 2020. She was 84 and the cause was a recurrence of throat cancer.

Linda Lou Moeller, Luana, died Saturday, Nov. 14, 2020, at Elkader Care Center, Elkader. She was born June 30, 1952 to Eldo and Mildred (Fette) Meyer in Oelwein. She graduated high school with the MFL class of 1970.

Marlin W. Dettman

Marlin Walter Dettman, 62, of McGregor, died Tuesday, Nov. 10, 2020, following a long and courageous battle with cancer with his family by his side. Marlin was born Feb. 4, 1958, to Norbert and Mildred (Nuehring) Dettman in Postville. In 1967, Marlin, along with his parents and grandparents, moved from the farm to Luana. He graduated from MFL High School with the class of 1975.

Gerald L. Perrinjaquet

Gerald Louis Perrinjaquet, 94, of Edgewood, passed away peacefully on Thursday, Nov. 12, at the Edgewood Convalescent Home. Known affectionately as “Perry,” Gerald was born on Aug. 12, 1926, in Edgewood, the only child of Louie and Glennie (Porter) Perrinjaquet. A life-long resident of Edgewood, Gerald graduated from Edgewood High School in 1943 and served his country honorably in WWII for the U.S. Army, where he was stationed in Japan. From the time he was a small boy working with his father to owning the business until his retirement, he dedicated his working career to building and growing the, now fourth generation, Edgewood Feed Mill. Gerald was a committed businessman and community contributor.
