Mary Jane Grove

Mary Jane Grove, 81, of Elkader, died Tuesday, August 7, 2018. Jane was born May 7, 1937, the daughter of Dr. Edwin C. and Cecelia (McGuire) O’Connor in New Hampton, Iowa. She attended school in New Hampton and graduated in 1955. While in high school, she accompanied large groups and individuals in vocal music. She received her B.S.N. from the College of St. Teresa, Winona, MN. She taught Nursing and Nursing Education at Northeast Iowa Community College in Calmar for 12 years. She retired in 1983.

On August 19, 1961, Jane was married to Donald Grove in New Hampton, Iowa. Jane was a member of P.E.O.  She also enjoyed playing bridge and cribbage. Jane always had a smile and a kind word for everyone. She was an avid reader and enjoyed gardening. She enjoyed watching the Iowa Hawkeyes play football, basketball and wrestling. Her greatest love of all was her grandchildren, the light of her life. Jane and Don were faithful members of St. Joseph’s Catholic Church in Elkader.

Kathryn “Kay” Schilling

Kathryn N. Schilling, 74, of Colesburg passed away Monday, August 6, 2018, at her home after a courageous battle with cancer.

Visitation was held from 2-8 p.m. Thursday, August 9, 2018, at Kramer Funeral Home, 750 12th Ave SW in Dyersville. A private family Memorial Service will be held. Burial will be in the St. Patrick Cemetery in Colesburg.
Kay was born June 24, 1944, in Elkader, the daughter of Azel and Norma (Warner) Pratt.  She graduated from Central High School in Elkader. She married John Schilling on November 21, 1963, in Elkader. Together they farmed near Colesburg. When they retired, Kathryn worked at Products Unlimited in Guttenburg.

Kay enjoyed her grandchildren, gardening and her flower beds, reading, and driving around with John. She also enjoyed her morning coffee group and visiting with family and friends. She enjoyed baking cookies for her grandkids as the cookie jar was never empty.

Sheldon Olson

Sheldon Olson

Sheldon Olson (80) of Marion died Monday July 30, 2018 at the University of Iowa Hospital, Iowa City. Services were held at 11 a.m. Monday August 6, 2018, at Cedar Memorial Chapel of Memories by the Rev. Linda Livingston. There was a visitation Sunday evening at Cedar Memorial Funeral Home from 5-7 p.m.

Surviving is his son, Bradley (LeeAnn) Olson of Walford his granddaughters Ashley Olson of Cedar Rapids and Tasha (Logan) Schmidt and future great-granddaughter of Cedar Rapids; two sisters, Helen Wagner of St. Olaf, Iowa; Donna (Ron) Foels of Elkader, Iowa; one brother, Paul (Gloria) Olson of Elkader, Iowa; and many nieces and nephews.  
He was preceded in death by his wife of 49 years Betty, his parents, four sisters and one brother.

Linda Lerch Vitek

Linda Lerch Vitek
June 16, 1949 to July 17, 2018

Linda Sue Lerch Vitek, 69, passed away Tuesday, July 17, 2018, at the Elkader Care Center. She was born June 16, 1949, in Oelwein, to Lawrence and Erma (Stannard) Lerch. She completed grades K-12 at Oran and Elkader Schools, graduating with the Central Class of 1967. Following graduation, she went to St. Luke’s School of Nursing, graduating in 1970. She worked 3- plus years at St. Luke’s on 3 West and 5 Central, and later at Gastroenterologists, P.C. She was a very sweet, caring, loving person and her personality certainly helped her be an awesome nurse.

She married John Bateman and to this union, son Mike Bateman, was born. The couple later divorced. Linda met Gary Vitek and was married on May 6, 1978, and to this union, son Joe Vitek was born. She had much pride and love for her family, especially her three granddaughters. She enjoyed many a conversation with her special friends and classmates over the years.

Karen Lee Orvis, 80, of Elkader, passed away Sunday, July 22, 2018, at Central Community Hospital in Elkader. She was born September 24, 1937, in Monona Iowa, to Everett “Pete” and Myrtle (Gilson) Drahn. Karen graduated from Monona High School, class of 1955. She excelled in music, playing both flute and piano, and athletics where she and her MFL teammates reached the second round of the 1955 state basketball tournament in Des Moines, losing to the eventual state champions.

She was united in marriage to Richard Lee Orvis on June 8, 1955, and they made their home in St. Olaf, Iowa, before relocating to Elkader in 1968. They became the parents of three children, Luanne, Brad, and Brenda.

Noraline Milda Lydia Lamborn, age 95, of Monona, passed away July 28, 2018, at Veterans Memorial Hospital in Waukon, Iowa, following a brief illness. Noraline M. L. Borcherding was born February 26, 1923, in Osterdock, Iowa, the daughter of Gustav and Mabel (Lundt) Borcherding. She was baptized at St. John’s Lutheran Church in Guttenberg on April 29, 1923, confirmed at Highland Lutheran Church in Elkader on December 18, 1938, and attended rural Clayton County Schools. Following her schooling, she worked as a housekeeper for rural area families. She also worked at the Battery Factory in Dubuque, Iowa before marrying Lloyd V. Lamborn.

John Miehe

John Edward Miehe

John Edward Miehe, 89, of Elkader, died Monday, July 16, 2018, at Central Community Hospital in Elkader, Iowa.

John was born May 18, 1929, at Mercy Hospital, Oelwein, Iowa to parents Elmer J. and Marie M. (Kelleher) Miehe. He graduated from St. Joseph’s School, Elkader, Iowa, in 1948.
John entered the US Army on January 15, 1951, serving in Korea and Japan. He was honorably discharged on January 15, 1953.
On February 14, 1953, John married Vernelda L. Fehlhafer at St. Joseph’s Church in Elkader.

Upon returning from his military service, he joined his father in the family John Deere business for 31 years until the business was sold. In May 1977, he started a new business, Elkader Diesel & Electric. The business was sold in 1988, at which time John retired.

Clark Pahlas
June 4, 1929 to July 10, 2018

Clark J. Pahlas, age 89, of Ripon, WI, came to the end of his journey on Tuesday, July 10, 2018, at Barrett House in Ripon.
Born on June 4, 1929, Clark was raised in Elkader, IA by his loving parents Julius and Clara Pahlas. He liked to share many fond memories of growing up in this small rural town. Upon graduating from high school, Clark spent four years in the Navy. He then married his high school sweetheart, Grace Crider. Together they moved to Yankton, SD where Clark attended Yankton College. He went on to earn a Masters of History and a Masters of Education from the University of South Dakota in Vermilion. Next stop was Rochester, MN where Clark became the Director of the Olmsted County Historical Society. The next challenge he took on was becoming the General Manager of Palmer Method Handwriting in Chicago, IL.

Miya Isabella Erickson

Miya Isabella Erickson

Miya Isabella Erickson, 14, daughter of Michael and Caroline Erickson and Amy and Walt Zehr was called home to her heavenly father on Sunday, July 8th, 2018.
Miya was born on December 29, 2003, in West Union, Iowa.  She was baptized into St. Joseph’s Catholic Church on February 1, 2004, and received her first holy communion on April 22, 2012. Miya was an incoming freshman and had attended Central Community Schools. She was active in both concert band and pep band where she played the flute and piccolo and was selected for Honor Band. Miya also participated in track, enjoyed gymnastics, was a member of the supreme honor roll and was football manager. She attended many Central sporting events supporting her brothers and cousins.
