John Wagner

John Wagner, 74, of Elkader, passed away January 10, 2016, at Mercy Hospital in Dubuque after an extended illness.

John was born June 20, 1941 and raised on a farm outside of Elkader where he enjoyed his many pets, raising cattle and crops. John also had a passion for working on machinery, especially older John Deere two-cylinder tractors. Until very recently, John still enjoyed visiting the farm where he was born and raised on his afternoon outings from the Elkader Care Center.

Vincent Kraus

Vincent Valentine Kraus, 79, of Jacksonville, FL, passed away peacefully at home on December 29, 2015. 

Vince, affectionately known as “Pop,” was born to Sirus and Millie Kraus in Volga, Iowa on February 14, 1936. He served in the United States Marine Corps (Korean War) from 1953-1958, the United States Navy from 1958-1962, and the Air National Guard of Florida from 1965-1967.

Caroline I. Schmidt

 

Caroline I. Schmidt, 90, of Prairie du Chien passed away Thursday, Dec. 31, at the Prairie Maison Care Center. 

She was born July 8, 1925 in Boscobel, WI the daughter of Robert and Anna (Heller) Flansburgh. She married Vincent Schmidt on Feb. 27, 1946 at St. Gabriel’s Church in Prairie du Chien. Together they farmed in rural Prairie du Chien. Vince preceded her in death on Sept. 24, 1972. Caroline worked out of her home babysitting and later as a nurse’s aide for the Prairie du Chien Memorial Hospital. She was an active member of St. Gabriel’s Church.

Ruth Meyers

Ruth M. Meyers, 94, of Elkader, died Sunday, December 20, 2015, at the Elkader Care Center. Ruth M. (Bauer) (Hrubes) Meyers was born on February 19, 1921, in Bismarck, North Dakota to Ralph and Clara (Uhlenhake) Bauer. She was the oldest of seven children. She attended elementary and high school in Wesley, Iowa, graduating in 1939. 

After her formal schooling she worked as a bookkeeper for her father in the implement business in Wesley, Iowa. She followed her love of music by playing piano in a local band called “Silver Moon” that played throughout North Central Iowa. Her love of music especially (polka and waltzes) continued throughout her life.

Charles “Chuck” Kelly

Charles Clyde ”Chuck” Kelly, 81, of Elkader, Iowa, passed away on Monday, December 14, 2015, at the University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics in Iowa City. He was born on June 2, 1934, in Littleport, the son of Gaye and Lois (Morarend) Kelly. Charles attended country school near Waterville and high school in Elkader. He enlisted in the U.S. Navy and served his country from 1952 to 1956 during the Korean War. He was honorably discharged in 1960.

Elvin Leroy Johnson

Elvin Lerow Johnson of Strawberry Point, formerly of Garnavillo, Iowa, died at his home after a sudden illness on Saturday morning, December 19, 2015, his 84th birthday.  

Friends and relatives are invited to attend any of the following on Saturday, December 26:  graveside service at 10:15 a.m. at the Garnavillo Community Cemetery; funeral service at 11 a.m. at St. Peter Lutheran Church, Garnavillo; visitation with the family from 1–3 p.m. at St. Peter Lutheran Church, Garnavillo.

James “Jim” Hopp

A private family service for James “Jim” Hopp will be held at 10 a.m. Saturday, December 19, 2015, at the Trinity Evangelical Lutheran Church in Austin, MN with Pastor Dean Gunn officiating. Burial will take place at a later date. Visitation will be held from 4-7 p.m. Friday, December 18, 2015, at the Hindt Funeral Home in Grand Meadow, MN and will continue one hour prior to the service at the church.

James “Jim” Hopp, 69, of Grand Meadow, MN passed away Sunday, December 13, 2015 at St. Marys Hospital in Rochester, MN.

Joyce Engelhardt

Joyce Lynn Engelhardt, 59, of Elkader, died December 5, 2015, at University Hospital in Iowa City. She was born in McGregor, on December 15, 1955, to Alan and Betty (Livingston) Engelhardt.

Joyce liked going to Rise and being with all of her friends there. She enjoyed music, listening to her records, going to the county fair, Johnson’s Restaurant and the shopping trips to Prairie du Chien, WI.

She is survived by her niece, Christine (Mark) Berns, her nephew, James Grocholski and sons, numerous aunts, cousins and friends.

Stanley Debes

Stanley Clair Debes, 73, of rural Mederville, died Monday, December 7, 2015, at Central Community Hospital in Elkader. He was born February 14, 1942, in rural Mederville to Clair and Madeline (Coonfare) Debes.

He was a dairy farmer who spent his entire life on the farm where he was born. Stanley farmed since he was 14 years old.

Phyllis Bergan

Phyllis Marilyn Bergan, 81, of Elkader, passed away November 30, 2015, at Central Community Hospital, Elkader, surrounded by her loving family. She was born February 23, 1934, in Central City, Iowa, the daughter of Donald and Rachel (Batchelder) Goodlove. She was raised by her mother and stepfather, Roland Walz. Marilyn attended country school in the Central City area and graduated from Garnavillo High School in 1952, and then Paris Beauty Academy in Cedar Rapids. She practiced as a beautician in her mother’s beauty shop, Ra Chellen’s Beauty Salon in Elkader. After starting her family, she opened a salon at her home on the farm in rural Elkader.
