Ronald Bahls

Ronald Alvin Bahls, age 70, of Garnavillo, IA, died Friday, January 10, 2020, at Scenic Acres in Saint Olaf, IA. He was born on January 19, 1949, the son of Alvin and LaVonne (Geuder) Bahls. 

            Ronald was baptized and confirmed at St. Paul Lutheran Church in Garnavillo and attended Central Community School in Elkader where he graduated with the class of 1968. After graduation Ron farmed with his father and later he farmed with his brother, Richard, until 2000 when he moved to Garnavillo with his parents. After retiring Ron worked part-time with Wikner Farms & and the Hog Buying Station. He resided at Scenic Acres for the past six years.

Freddie “Fred” Horstman, Garnavillo, IA, passed away suddenly at his home on December 29, 2019. He was born December 30, 1954.

Arrangements are pending. Military rights will be done at a later date.

Janet Entwisle

Janet Lorraine Entwisle 77, of rural Hawkeye passed away December 19, 2019, at Gunderson Palmer Lutheran Hospital in West Union Iowa. Janet was born at home in rural West Union, Iowa, on February 22, 1942, to Loyd and Violet (Walker) Entwisle. She attended elementary schools in Clayton and Fayette counties, and graduated from North High School in 1960. Janet then attended Young School of Beauty in Waterloo, Iowa. She was a cosmetologist in Cresco, Iowa for 52 years.

Janet was a member of the United Methodist Church in West Union since 1954. Her hobbies included riding horses, softball and bowling. She collected commemorative plates from places she visited, and friends and family. Janet enjoyed taking many of her nieces on vacation trips. One of the highlights of some of the great-nieces and nephews was the New Year’s Party with a sleepover.

Geneva Hoth

Geneva Ann Hoth, 87, of Monona, Iowa passed away peacefully on Sunday, December 22, 2019, surrounded by family at Gundersen Health Care, LaCrosse, Wisconsin. She was born on March 3, 1932, in rural Guttenberg, Iowa to Ray and Pearl (Taake) Marmann. She was raised in rural Elkader and attended Hanover Country School. Gen was baptized, confirmed and later united in marriage with Vernon Hoth on May 10, 1956, at Peace United Church of Christ, Elkader, Iowa.

Gen was a member of the St. Olaf Auxiliary Unit #388 and Peace United Church of Christ, along with being a homemaker and loving mother. She was employed over the years at St. Olaf Coop Grocery, Wilke’s Grocery in Monona, Iowa and Johnson’s Restaurant in Elkader, Iowa. She enjoyed gardening, cooking, baking, bingo, playing cards, and polka music. Gen loved spending time with her family and she was blessed to celebrate fifty years of marriage with her loving husband.

Roger Scott

 

Roger F Scott, 69, died Dec. 20, 2019 of natural causes.  He would have celebrated his 70th birthday Dec. 23, 2019.  Roger was from Elkader, Iowa, but had been a Marion/Cedar Rapids resident since his kids were young.  He was a teacher at English Valley and coached the EV Bears in football and wrestling early in his career.  He worked for Borst Brothers Construction during his tenure in Marion and retired in 2008.  He was an avid hunter and fisherman and loved to cheer on the Iowa Hawkeyes with his close friends and family.

Roger is preceded in death by his parents, Melvin and Marion Scott and his nephew, Craig Noggle.

Ivanelle Garms

Ivanelle Martha Caroline Garms, 95, of Monona, Iowa died Thursday, December 19, 2019, at Good Samaritan Center, Postville, Iowa. She was born May 14, 1924, to Lorenz Sr and Adele (Fascher) Lenth in rural Luana.

On June 6, 1943, Ivanelle was united in marriage with LaVerne Garms at St. John Lutheran Church in Luana. They were married 67 years and farmed near Monona until their retirement. In their later years they resided at the Garden View Living Center in Monona.

Ivanelle is survived by her five children, Wayne (Lois) Garms of Monona, Judy (Rex) Carlson of Woodbury, Minnesota, Keith (Kathy) Garms of Elkader, Kristy (Joey) Rigdon of Fairbank and Laurie (Phil Steffen) Garms of Dubuque; nine grandchildren and 11 great-grandchildren.

Verna Medberry

Verna Anna Medberry, 96, of West Union, Iowa, formerly of Volga and Elgin, Iowa passed away on Thursday, December 19, 2019, due to natural causes. Verna was born October 1, 1923, the daughter of Henry W. and Sabina Gross at her family’s Eldorado, Iowa farm home. She attended Dover Number 2 School in Eldorado until she entered West Union High School. She continued her post-secondary education at Cedar Rapids Business College and upon graduation 1942 was employed at 1st National Bank, West Union, Iowa until her marriage to Glen Medberry August 14, 1949. They farmed north of Volga, Iowa until retiring to Elgin, Iowa.  Glen passed away Feb. 10, 2014.  Verna resided at Stoney Brook Village, West Union, Iowa, the past five years.

Joe Dougherty

Joseph Emmet Dougherty shed his earthly shoes and entered the house of his Creator on December 15, 2019. He was 87. "Joe" to everyone who knew him, passed peacefully in the Elkader home he shared with his wife of 66 years, Jean Dougherty. Joe and Jean were married on Valentine’s Day in 1953. A respected businessman, Joe’s life was defined by his service to country and family. He was a decorated war veteran who saw tours of duty in Inchon during the Korean War. He was honorably discharged from the U.S. Army as a sergeant on July 20, 1954. He was a long-term member of the American Legion and the Knights of Columbus.

Mass of Christian burial was held at 10 a.m. on Saturday, December 21 at the St. Joseph Catholic Church in Elkader with Rev. John Haugen as Celebrant. A private ceremony for family followed at St. Joseph Catholic Cemetery. There was no visitation prior to services. In lieu of flowers, a memorial fund has been has been established.

Vivian Nuehring

May 18, 1925-December 13, 2019

Vivian Nuehring, 94, of Elkader, Iowa formerly of Farmersburg, Iowa died Friday, December 13, 2019, at Elkader Care Center, Elkader, Iowa. She was born May 18, 1925, to Ray and Lucille (Ricketts) Canoe near Pleasant Ridge, rural Monona, Iowa. She attended Swede Ridge Country School and Monona High School through the eleventh grade.

Vivian was preceded in death by her husband, Fred in 1992; sons, Curt and Ron Nuehring; her parents and sisters, Gretta Baxter and Ellen Ferguson.

Visitation was Tuesday, December 17, 2019, from 5-7 p.m. at Leonard-Grau Funeral Home and Cremation Service, Monona, Iowa and one hour before services at the church on Wednesday. Funeral services were held at 11 a.m. on Wednesday, December 18, 2019, at St. John Lutheran Church, Farmersburg, Iowa with Rev. Jerome Godson as the Officiant. Burial followed at Monona Cemetery, Monona, Iowa.

Leonard-Grau Funeral Home and Cremation Service, Monona, assisted the family with arrangements.

Martha Marrah

Martha Ellen (Robbins) Marrah, 67, of Deland FL, formerly of Elkader, passed away peacefully December 9, 2019, at home in DeLand Florida of Glioblastoma multiforme brain cancer with her husband Joe by her side.

 

 Martha was born in West Union Iowa on January 22, 1952. She was raised on a farm south of Mederville by her parents, John and Gladys Robbins. Martha graduated at Elkader Central High School in 1970. On June 20, 1970, she was united in marriage to Joe Marrah of Elkader, formerly of Strawberry Point, IA. To this union they were blessed with two boys, Brian of Sanford, Florida and David of Kansas City, MO.

 

Survived by husband Joe, Deland, FL, sons Brian of Sanford, FL, and David and wife Carrie of Kansas City, MO, grandchildren Austin, Ellie and Brextin, Kansas City, MO; brother, Harry (Gloria) Robbins, Elkader and sister, Celia Proctor, Neosho, MO.
