The MFL MarMac volleyball team will rely on four returning seniors to propel its success this season.

“They have seen three years of varsity and are used to playing with each other,” said head coach Kelly Winter of the core group, which includes Bailey Winter, Brinan Berger, RoseMary McGeough and Rachel Davis. “These seniors have played enough volleyball together to know each other’s tendencies, and that is going to help us in close games. They just all mesh together and are not selfish about how we get the win, as long as we get it.”

This season, for the first time in recent years, MFL MarMac will field full boys and girls cross country teams.

“And what’s better,” said head coach Eric Koenig, “we’ve got a solid five boys and five girls who have the potential to score well as a team at every meet.”

Koenig said the team is full of kids who enjoy running and pushing themselves to get better. A great group of seniors has emerged as real leaders, and they’re setting good examples for the younger athletes, he added. The underclassmen also have a lot of talent, and they aren’t afraid to work.

The MFL MarMac football team boasts a 44-man roster this year, growing nine players from a squad that went 4-5 a year ago and had the school’s best season in a decade. Those players also worked hard in the offseason, making the overall team stronger and faster, noted head coach Dan Anderson.

“We’ve really started getting things turned around here,” he said, “and we do have a lot of those kids back.”

Among the returners are 13 seniors, which Anderson said is key.

The MFL MarMac softball team returns seven starters from last year, which head coach Jerald Kleve said will be a huge strength this season.

Of those seven, five are seniors: Hannah Schutte, Lizzie Herzmann, Keagan Moose, Kyleigh Picha and Jayde Schubert.

“They’ve been out all four years,” said Kleve. “That’s experience and the confidence level that will bring with that. That’s the biggest thing we have. The kids are comfortable.”

Kleve also values the insight he and new assistant coach Pat Wille can provide.

The MFL MarMac baseball team will rely on an experienced pitching staff to reach the next level this season.

Ninety-seven percent of last year’s staff returns this summer, and all but one athlete has multiple years of varsity experience, according to head coach Brandon Burke. The leaders will include juniors Jackson Landt and Cedrick Drahn, senior Nathan Johanningmeier and sophomore Max Havlicek.

“All four of these guys have experienced success in the past and we are looking for them to be work horses on the mound,” said Burke, who’s entering his fourth season with the Bulldogs.

A Bulldog alum, Kirkestue has served as an assistant for both track and football, but this will be his first time in charge. He looks forward to gaining experience through this opportunity, as well as helping his athletes grow.

“I feel I have a simple coaching philosophy, and that is to develop young student athletes into outstanding individuals by using the sport to teach valuable life lessons,” Kirkestue said. “The athlete will learn the principles that make up a strong and reliable work ethic.”

Kylie Sandstrom had one goal when she took over as head coach of the MFL MarMac girls track team this year: to increase the number of participants. With 12 girls currently on the roster, a handful more than last year, she can already cross that off the list.

Now, it’s time for another goal. That one, she said, is to simply be there for the kids.

“I’m not here to benefit myself,” Sandstrom shared. “I’m here to benefit the kids—however I can push them to be better in the event they want to be in.”
