It was a happy ending to MFL MarMac’s homecoming week, as the Bulldog football team rolled to a 40-14 victory over Starmont on Friday night.

“The kids came out ready to play this week,” said head coach Dan Anderson. “It was a dominating performance by our defense, and offense and special teams played pretty well too.”

MFL MarMac scored first in the game when, with seven minutes to go in the opening quarter, Karter Decker picked up a short touchdown after a muffed Stars punt gave the Bulldogs good field position. The extra point made it 7-0.

Central cross country excels at Waukon

By Willis Patenaude, Times-Register

The cross country team contributed to Central’s remarkable week in sports, putting in exceptional performances at the Waukon meet Sept. 22, where ribbons were won, personal times were bested and school records fell.

The high school girls ran in the JV races, a decision that was made “to give all of our runners a chance to run as a group and get a feel for where they are within the group. We thought that could give them a chance to focus on each other and gain some experience toward what we need to work on as a team to be our best down the road in October,” said assistant coach Martha Bauder.

The MFL MarMac volleyball won its second game of the season—and second Upper Iowa Conference match-up—on Sept. 24, in a five-set thriller with North Fayette Valley.

The Bulldogs were in control early, winning the first two sets 25-21 and 25-22. The TigerHawks played their way back into the game in the third set, however, coming away with a 25-21 advantage. NFV carried that momentum into the fourth set, cruising to a 25-12 victory. MFL MarMac fought back, though, pushing to a 15-11 win in the final frame.

Nelson celebrates 50 years as bus driver

When asked what’s kept him going for 50 years, Eddie Nelson said it’s a sense of responsibility to the community. (Photo by Willis Patenaude)

“Wow! I got old. Has it really been 50 years? It doesn’t seem like that long. It seems like it was just yesterday,” Eddie Nelson said, reflecting on the last 50 years of dedicated service as a bus driver at Central School.

It’s been 50 years of changes, experiences and memories that have shaped him into the city eschewing, small community bound person that he is today. It’s 50 years that also includes working on the family farm, as a fuel delivery driver and as owner of “The Store,” a local convenience store on Bridge Street.

COVID-19 in Clayton County: What happens when there are cases at local schools?

By Audrey Posten, Times-Register

It was inevitable. Now a month into the school year, districts in Clayton County have had reported cases of COVID-19.

“Central had its first confirmed case of COVID two weeks ago last Thursday,” said Central Superintendent Nick Trenkamp last week. “We followed the guidance set forth from the Iowa Department of Public Health (IDPH) in regard to contact tracing. Students found to be in close contact were sent home for a 14-day quarantine. It is important that the community knows that this is not a local decision. The 14-day quarantine is a mandate from the IDPH and all school districts are required to follow it.”
