McGregor Council candidates share thoughts

McGregor residents will take to the polls Tuesday, Nov. 3, to elect a mayor and two council members. Incumbent mayor Harold Brooks is running unopposed for a two-year term, but the two council seats are up for grabs, with incumbents Rogeta Halvorson and Joe Muehlbauer taking on newcomer Jason Echard for four-year terms. Polls will be open from 7 a.m. to 8 p.m., at the McGregor Public Library.

Incumbent Rogeta Halvorson is the daughter of Roger and Connie Halvorson and has three siblings, a daughter, son-in-law and grandson. She is currently the executive director of the Monona Chamber and Economic Development.

Snack pack program receives funds, continues to aid local children

Several local ladies, including (left) Laura Nozal, Jackie Lamb, Kathryn Starkey, Darlene Wilker, Bona Dean Feller and Deb Moon, helped fill snack packs for MFL MarMac elementary students last week at Living Faith United Methodist Church in McGregor. The snack packs are distributed confidentially, before each weekend, to students in need, to supplement food received at home. Kathryn Starkey fills a snack pack, which is the size of a Ziploc bag, with juice boxes and apple sauce. Other items added to the packs include cereal, mac and cheese, crackers, pudding cups and fruit snacks.

With the help of some local church volunteers, area kids in need are getting “snack packs” of food to tide them over during weekends away from the school’s regularly-provided meals.

Snack pack distribution began in 2009, kickstarted by Bona Dean Feller, who, the year prior, attended a United Methodist Celebrate Women Day in Texas, where a presentation was given on a similar program. Upon returning home, she contacted MFL MarMac elementary principal Kathy Koether and Mary Kleve, who was the guidance counselor at that time, to learn if a local program was needed.

Wetlands Centre welcomes Russian visitors

Last week, Marquette’s Driftless Area Wetlands Centre hosted two representatives from Russia’s Khakassky State Nature Reserve, as part of the Russia-USA Wetland Center Exchange Program: Linking People and Wetlands project.

The Wetlands Centre was one of three wetlands centers in the United States chosen to participate in the project, which seeks to identify shared challenges organizations in the U.S. and Russia face in regard to wetlands education and outreach.

Clean and Fresh Laundromat, Decor and More open in Monona

Two new businesses have joined the ranks of the Monona business community, with the opening of the Clean and Fresh Laundromat and Decor and More at the corner of Main and Center Streets.

The laundromat, opened by Kenny Johanningmeier, was the brainchild of his daughter, Ashlee Johanningmeier, who also opened Decor and More with her friend, Chelsi Brainard.

“We were in here cleaning up and I thought it would be an amazing spot for a laundromat,” said Ashlee of the area at the front of the building that now houses Clean and Fresh.

Norma Catherine (Schoulte) Mitchell

Norma Catherine (Schoulte) Mitchell, 82, of Prairie du Chien, passed away on Friday, Oct. 16, at Gundersen Lutheran Medical Center, La Crosse, due to complications of a stroke.

She was born on Sept. 22, 1933 in Farmersburg Township to Oliver and Lydia (Handke) Schoulte.

She grew up on the family farm near National and this is where she developed her life-long love of plants and birds.

Vehicle rear-ended as driver yields to fire truck

The accident occurred when one vehicle rear-ended another, which was pulling over to the side of the road to yield to a fire truck. (Photos by Audrey Posten)

Several McGregor Hook and Ladder trucks were already in the area at the time of the accident, responding to a reported explosion that occurred in the woods between Breezy Pointe and the highway.

Multiple people were injured Wednesday, Oct. 7, in an afternoon accident near the intersection of Eagle Drive and Highway 18, near the Breezy Pointe Subdivision, west of Marquette.

According to an Iowa State Patrol report, the accident occurred when a Chrysler van driven by Tanya Wolcott, 29, of West Union, heading westbound on Highway 18, pulled to the right side of the road to yield to a fire truck exiting the subdivision. A Chevy Impala, driven by Dorothy Naber, 75, of Cedar Falls, was following the Wolcott vehicle, but was unable to stop, striking the Wolcott vehicle in the rear.

Hands-on approach helps local kids learn about fire safety

Getting to spray a fire hose is one of the most-enjoyed stations for kids attending the Monona Volunteer Fire Department’s program for National Fire Safety Week.

To simulate the effects of fire in a home, the Monona Fire Department created a small-scale house and set it on fire. It showed MFL MarMac third graders how smoke and fire rise and quickly spread.

During Fire Prevention Week, Monona firemen talked about the different fire trucks, and the equipment housed in each, including the Jaws of Life, a chainsaw, generator, traffic cones, tools and more.

An important aspect of National Fire Prevention Week involves telling kids about fire safety: install smoke alarms throughout the house and check them monthly, develop an escape plan and meeting place, have fire extinguishers in the home.

For MFL MarMac elementary students, not only do they learn about this key information, but a series of hands-on activities and demonstrations by the Monona Volunteer Fire Department also helps them experience why fire safety is important and how firefighters protect the community.

Library operations moved to new addition as renovations continue at Murphy Helwig Library

Murphy Helwig Library’s main operations have now moved to its new front (shown here) and side additions while renovations take place in the original section of the library.

The library’s new meeting room currently houses books. The expansion project is expected to be complete in mid-December.

People can now enter the library through the front door (shown here), and many have remarked on the additional space, said library director Chris Bee.

Monona's Murphy Helwig Library was closed last week as books and computers were moved to the library’s new addition to accommodate renovations to the original section of the library. This was the first major closure of the library since construction began in late spring on the expansion project.

Plans have been in the works for several years for the expansion, which includes a new addition to the front of the building. It will house the children’s collection and activity area. On the left side of the library (from the front), a meeting room has been added along with a young adult area and a study room.

Burkle honored for 11 years on school board

The MFL MarMac School Board honored Patty Burkle at its Oct. 12 meeting, recognizing her 11 years of service on the board. Burkle, who chose not to run for re-election in September, was most recently the board president. She said she enjoyed her time on the school board and encouraged other parents to get involved.

Three generations of the Moon family reflect on changes in the club and 4-H over the years

For 75 years, the Monona Jr. Feeders 4-H Club has provided area youth with an enriching 4-H experience. Throughout that time, three generations of the Moon family have been part of it.

The club was young when Vernice Moon got involved around age 12 or 13, in the 1940s. He recalled only 10 to 12 members, who were farm kids from the Monona area—all boys. Meetings were held monthly, with kids gathering at one another’s homes.
