Marquette Council talks bench evacuation route

The Marquette Council would still like to do more research and planning before moving forward with an emergency evacuation route off the “bench.”

The topic was discussed at the council’s June 21 meeting, during which engineer Bart Nies, with Delta 3 Engineering in Platteville, shared his idea for a potential route.

10th annual Emma Big Bear Day to be held July 5 in Marquette

Established in 2012 by Roger and Connie Halvorson of Marquette, the Emma Big Bear Foundation (EBBF) is a non-profit 501(c)3 organization whose mission is to preserve and protect the history, stories, traditions and artifacts associated with Emma Big Bear and to promote and educate the public about American Indians and their history and culture, especially Big Bear’s tribe, the Winnebago/Ho-Chunk Nation. Each year on July 5, EBBF presents a historical program covering a variety of topics, discussions and displays celebrating the life and times of Emma Big Bear and her people. Marking its tenth anniversary, this year’s program also coincides with what would have been Big Bear’s 147th birthday (born July 5, 1869; died Aug. 21, 1968).

‘Sucker Shack’ now on McGregor riverfront

If you visited the McGregor riverfront late last week, you may have noticed a new, wooden addition at the docks. The structure, a converted 1973 Holiday Shores houseboat lovingly dubbed the “Sucker Shack,” belongs to Robert Vavra, captain of Maiden Voyage Boat Tours.

Vavra, now in his 10th year in the business and sixth year in McGregor, said he wants the “Sucker Shack” to help establish a physical presence in McGregor when his Maiden Voyage boat is not there.

Group meets to begin ‘staging a comeback’ of McGregor’s Sullivan Opera House

A group of around a dozen people met last week to begin “staging a comeback” of McGregor’s Sullivan Opera House (hardware store). The goal was to identify actions that can be taken now to jump-start the building’s restoration, including working to form a non-profit, starting to clean up the building and holding an event to drum up interest in the project. Located at 252-256 Main St., the original building was constructed in 1877 and known as the Munson Block. T.J. Sullivan purchased the building in 1905 and, feeling there was a need for an opera house in the community, quickly remodeled the second floor to become the Sullivan Opera House.

Trails; improvements to community parks, signage and roads; safety and community pride are the top priorities of Monona residents, according to the team that led the Monona Community Visioning design workshop and presentation June 18, during Hay Days.

The workshop was the culmination of an input-gathering process over the last several months to identify transportation needs and opportunities for enhancements in the city. A design team from Iowa State University then worked to incorporate the ideas into a conceptual transportation and landscape enhancement plan.

Sample the eclectic mix of wines and beers from over a dozen regional wineries and breweries at the seventh annual Lazy River Beer and Wine Festival, held Saturday, June 25, from noon to 4 p.m., on the Marquette riverfront.

Seven wineries will be featured at this year’s event, including Marquette’s own Eagles Landing Winery, Dubuque Heritage Winery, PromiseLand Winery from Guttenberg, Winneshiek Wildberry Winery from Decorah, Empty Nest Winery from Waukon, Jennings Winery from Strawberry Point and Country Barn Winery from Primghar, in northwest Iowa.

Monona Council holds off on hotel feasibility study decision

The Monona Council continued its discussion on having a company perform a hotel feasibility study for the community at its June 20 meeting, but held off on making a decision until more information can be gathered.

The idea was first brought up at the last council meeting, on June 6, when mayor Barb Collins said a representative from Cobblestone Inn and Suites had approached the city with the suggestion.

City manager Dan Canton said he has names of several independent companies who perform studies, noting that a potential study would include two phases.

McGregor P&Z asked to take a look at Main Street zoning

At its June 15 meeting, the McGregor City Council expressed a desire for the city’s planning and zoning commission to review and revise McGregor’s code in regard to zoning, citing community concerns over downtown storefronts being used as apartments rather than for commercial purposes.

“If we lose storefronts, it hurts other businesses,” said city administrator Lynette Sander.

It also hurts the city in regard to taxes, added councilwoman Rogeta Halvorson.

Bettie M. Mueller

Bettie M. Mueller, 94, of Davenport, passed away on Wednesday, Nov. 25, 2015, at ManorCare Health Services-Utica Ridge. 

Bettie Marie DeHaven was born on July 11, 1921, in McGregor, Iowa, the daughter of Earle and Lucile (Edwards) DeHaven. In 1939, she married Fred Mueller in Independence, Iowa. He preceded her in death in 2012. Mrs. Mueller worked as a 911 radio operator for the Scott County Sheriff’s Department until her retirement in 1986. She was a member of St. Johns United Methodist Church, Davenport, and enjoyed singing in the choir in her younger years. Bettie loved music and sang to her family and friends and the staff at ManorCare.

Ann Louise Trudo, 74, of Marquette, Iowa died Monday, June 13, at her home in Marquette, Iowa. 

Ann was the daughter of Philip J. Jenson and Martha (Cole) Jenson and was born on Feb. 16, 1942 in Iowa City. She graduated from Lansing High School in 1960.
