Beatrice Jean Check, age 91 of Prairie du Chien passed away Saturday, August 22, 2026, at Great River Care Center in McGregor, Iowa.

She was born on April 11, 1935, to Louis and Leona (White) Neisius. She married Allen T. Check on October 4, 1955. Together, they raised eight children on the family farm: Sue, Mike, Cindy, Nancy, Denise, Ron, Cathy, and Dan.

Jean worked as a telephone operator, Villa Louis tour guide, and at Walmart in Prairie du Chien. She was very active in the state and county 4-H programs.

She spent many hours making quilts for family. Jean was an amateur genealogist, tracing her family’s history back many generations. She enjoyed baking and made great apple pie.

Her husband Allen preceded her in death on August 7, 1997.

She is survived by her children Sue Lynch, Mike (Barb) Check, Cindy (Louis) Spiker, Nancy (Bill) Gher, Denise (Dan) Vinopal, Ron Check, Cathy (Dean) Jerrett, and Dan (Gidget) Check; sisters Lois Balk and Rita “Pat” Geiwitz; half-sisters Luann Chambers and Mary Neisius; 2 stepbrothers Jerry and Ken Kavon; and numerous grandchildren and great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her parents Leona Kavon and Louis Neisius; parents-in-law John Rand and Julia Check; granddaughter Melissa Cooley; brother Gary Neisius; stepsister Mary Lou Kavon; and son-in-law Bill Lynch.

A Mass of Christian Burial was held Friday, Aug. 28, 2026, at 11 a.m. at St. John’s Church of the Holy Family Parish, Fr. Brandon Guenther officiated with burial in the Calvary Cemetery, both in Prairie du Chien.
