Despite trailing visiting North Crawford 3-2 heading into the bottom of the second inning, the Seneca Royals Softball team still managed to make quick work of the conference rivals with a 17-3 win in three innings last Tuesday, April 28.
North Crawford opened the game with two runs in the top of the first inning. Seneca answered back with a pair of runs of their own in the bottom of the first inning. The Trojans retook the lead 3-2 with a run in the top of the second inning but it was Seneca from there on as the Royals responded with eight runs in the bottom of the second inning and seven more runs in the bottom of the third inning to claim a 17-3 win via the 15-run rule.
Brigid Hall (three runs allowed on five hits and two walks with five strikeouts in 3.0 innings pitched) earned the win on the mound for Seneca.
Seneca’s offense erupted for 17 runs on 18 hits. Seven different players had multiple hits in the game, including three hits each by Addison Davidson (3-for-4 with a double and two runs scored), Karsyn Thoma (3-for-3 with a double, two runs scored and two RBIs) and Sophia Clark (3-for-3 with two doubles, three runs scored and three RBIs).
Also collecting multiple hits in the win for the Royals were Grace Varo (2-for-4 with a double, one run scored and two RBIs), Brittany Heisz (2-for-3 with three runs scored and three RBIs), Raya Wallin (2-for-2 with a walk, two runs scored and two RBIs and Hall (2-for-2 with a walk, two runs scored and one RBI). Lily Payne (1-for-3 with a run scored and two RBIs) added a triple for the Royals. Seneca improved to 4-6 overall and 2-2 in the Ridge & Valley Conference with the win.
Like their baseball counterparts at the school, Seneca softball is scheduled to play four games in five days this week, starting with games at La Farge and Hillsboro this past Monday and Tuesday nights. The Royals then end the week with home games vs. De Soto and Kickapoo on Thursday and Friday nights respectively.
