Following their week three loss to Potosi/Cassville, coach Wade Winkers and his River Ridge football team bounced back in a big way last Friday night with a convincing 64-6 victory over visiting Riverdale.

With the win, River Ridge improved to 1-1 in Six Rivers conference action and 3-1 overall, and sit in a four-way tie for third in the conference standings behind Potosi/Cassville (2-0) and Iowa-Grant (2-0).

Winkers’ Timberwolves dominated their visitors from Riverdale on both sides of the ball, accumulating 413 yards and eight touchdowns on offense, while the River Ridge defense limited the Chieftains to 139 yards of total offense and one score.

It was a total team effort for the Timberwolves, who had nine different players carry the ball, and three different players with at least one reception.

With 107 yards on 10 rushing attempts, senior quarterback Blake Reynolds led River Ridge’s ground game, which averaged 9.4 yards per attempt, and finished with 310 yards and seven touchdowns on 33 attempts.

Reynolds scored his first of two rushing touchdowns from two yards out in the second quarter and his second from 44 yards out in the third.

Reynolds also completed 7-of-11 passing attempts for 103 yards and two more scores, the first being hauled in by fellow senior Cael Koenig from nine yards out in the second quarter, and the second by fellow senior Aaren Bedward from 24 yards out in the third.

For Bedward, it was his only catch of the game, while Koenig led all receivers with four receptions for 60 yards. Fellow senior Kameren Reynolds had two catches for 19 yards in the victory.

With nine different players getting at least one carry, rushing yards were spread out for the Timberwolves.

Senior fullback Noah Copsey finished with 64 yards on a team-high 11 carries, scoring on a two-yard TD plunge in the first quarter and on a six-yard TD run in the third.

Sophomore Luke Wehrle rushed for 39 yards on just three carries and scored on a 15-yard TD run late in the fourth quarter. Juniors Preston Gage and Alan Hernandez-Perez each had one carry, Gage scoring from 29 yards out in the first quarter, and Hernandez-Perez from 31 yards out late in the third.

Also having a busy night was kicker Luke Wehrle, who was a perfect 8-for-8 on extra-point kicks and had 10 kickoffs for 381 yards and two touchbacks.

Riverdale’s lone score came early in the second quarter on a 29-yard pass play from quarterback Bevyn Dennis to junior receiver James Schramm.

Defensively for the Timberwolves, Reynolds led the team with seven tackles, three solo and one for loss. Koenig was close behind with six tackles, four for loss and a team-high 2.5 sacks.

In all, the Timberwolves had four sacks, with Emery Simmerson having one and Nathan Crubel half a sack. Brogan Mezera recovered one fumble and Aaren Bedward had the team’s only interception.

The Timberwolves (1-1, 3-1) will travel to Boscobel (0-2, 0-4) this Friday night, who is coming off a 54-0 shutout loss to Potosi/Cassville.
