The Wauzeka-Steuben Softball team entered last week undefeated in conference play and they enter this week still undefeated in conference play. First up for the Hornets was a visit by the De Soto Pirates last Monday, April 27.
The Hornets used a four-run second inning to extend their lead to 5-0 before adding five runs in the bottom of the fourth inning. The Pirates staved off the 10-run rule by scoring a pair of runs in the top of the fifth inning. W-S was able to add one more run in the bottom of the fifth inning before holding on to an 11-2 victory.
Brianna Ray (two runs allowed on four hits and one walk with 13 strikeouts in 7.0 innings pitched) earned the win in the pitching circle. The Hornets offense was firing on all cylinders during the game, collecting 10 hits as a team with six of those hits being extra base hits by five different players. Isabella Bunders (2-for-4 with a double, triple, three runs scored and one RBI), Devyn Allert (2-for-3 with a double, a walk and three RBIs) and Avery Kilburg (2-for-3 with one run scored and one RBI) each having multiple hits in the win. Hornet batters Abby Wright (1-for-4 with a double and three runs scored), Madyson Schambow (1-for-3 with one run scored), Molli Hooker (1-for-3 with a double, two runs scored and one RBI) and Alayna Krachey (1-for-3 with a double and one RBI) all had a hit in the win.
Kickapoo made the journey to Wauzeka the following night and the Hornets sent the Panthers home with a 10-0 defeat in five innings. The Hornets once again got on the scoreboard first with a pair of runs in the second inning. W-S would add three more in the fourth and five more in the bottom of the fifth inning to earn the win.
Ray (zero runs allowed on two hits and two walks with six strikeouts in 5.0 innings pitched) once again earned the win on the mound for Wauzeka-Steuben. Wright led the Hornets offense by going 3-for-4 with two doubles and four RBIs in the win. The Hornets also got multiple hits from Schambow (2-for-3 with two runs scored and one RBI), Hooker (2-for-3 with two runs scored) and Krachey (2-for-2 with a walk and two runs scored). Bunders (1-for-4 with two runs scored and one RBI) added a hit in the win.
The Hornets ended the week by hosting the Fennimore Golden Eagles last Friday evening. The Golden Eagles entered the game at 9-3 overall and 4-2 in the SWAL Conference. Fennimore jumped out in front early 4-0 thanks to scoring two runs in both the top of the first inning and the top of the second inning. Wauzeka-Steuben would cut the lead in half with a pair of runs in the bottom of the fourth inning but Fennimore would add an insurance run in top of the fifth inning and subsequently go on to defeat the Hornets by a score of 5 to 2.
Allert (four runs allowed on four hits and zero walks in 2.0 innings pitched) suffered the pitching loss for W-S. Ray (one run allowed on two hits and one walk with two strikeouts in 5.0 innings pitched) finished the game on the mound for the Hornets.
Wauzeka-Steuben (4-2 overall, 4-0 in the Ridge & Valley Conference) was scheduled to host Cashton this past Tuesday night and North Crawford tomorrow night before welcoming La Farge to town on Friday. The two teams will resume their suspended game from April 23 before playing their regularly scheduled game.
