Lawrence “Larry” Jay Long, 84, formerly of Janesville and of Prairie du Chien, passed away peacefully on Sept. 16, 2026, at Thornton Manor in Lansing, Iowa.
Larry retired from General Motors after a long career. He enjoyed the simple things in life — fishing, hunting, playing bingo, and going for bike rides. His family brought him his greatest joy, but the Mississippi River also held a special place in his heart. He spent much of his life on and around the river, a connection that began in childhood and remained with him throughout his years.
Larry learned the value of hard work at an early age. As a boy, he would pick berries, gather night crawlers, and pick wildflowers to earn money. His love for the outdoors began at a young age and remained with him throughout his life.
Above all, Larry was a devoted grandpa. His grandchildren and great-grandchildren were a tremendous source of pride and joy, and the memories they made together will be treasured for generations to come. He had a way of making ordinary moments special, and his family will remember not only the things they did together, but the love and presence he brought to their lives.Larry will always be remembered for his love of music, especially his favorite song, The Battle of New Orleans. Its familiar tune will bring back memories of Larry and the many moments shared with him.
Larry was preceded in death by his beloved wife of 55 years, Arlene; his daughter, Kristine (Brian) Williams; his parents, Clato and Mildred; and his siblings, Robert, Richard, Bill, and Mary.
He is survived by his children, Steven (Lisa) Long and Laurie (Mat) Hedgecock; his grandchildren, Wade, Brittany (Brandon), Jordan, Brady, Adam, Haley (Martin), and Megan; and his great-grandchildren, Jaxon, Brennan, Ryder, Thea, Bladen, Remi, Britta, Oliver, and Myles. He is also survived by his siblings Junior (Phyllis) Long and Shirley Long.
Larry will be deeply missed by his family and friends. His love of the outdoors, the Mississippi River, and, most importantly, his family will remain a lasting part of the legacy he leaves behind.
A Visitation will be Saturday, Oct. 3, from 9 to 11 a.m. at the Garrity Funeral Home Chapel, with interment in the Evergreen Cemetery, both in Prairie du Chien. www.garrityfuneralhome.com
